AI Bias Adds Complexity To AI Systems
One of the biggest issues with Artificial Intelligence and Data Science is the integrity of our data. Even if we did all the right things in our models, and our testing and data might conform to a technical standard of "cleanliness," there might still be biases as well as "common sense" issues" that may come up. With Big Data, it is difficult to get to a certain granularity of data validity without proper, real-world testing. By real-world testing, we mean that when data is being used to make decisions, as consumers, testers, programmers, and data scientists, we look at groups of scenarios to see if the decisions are made to conform to a standard of "common sense". This means when we discover the most important biases in our data.

Big Four Invest Billions in Tech, Reshaping Their Identities
The Big Four accounting firms, through an unprecedented investment of billions into technology, are transforming not just how they operate, but also their very identities. The tech crusade goes far beyond automating standard auditing and accounting work. Through a focus on artificial intelligence, data analytics, and massive tech training throughout their organizations, the biggest players in accounting are making tech part of their DNA. "We haven't become a pure technology firm," Christian Rast, KPMG LLP's global head of technology & knowledge said in a recent phone interview. "We are a professional services firm, but technology is core to our future."
Blacklisted Chinese Firm Megvii Cleared for $500 Million Hong Kong IPO
Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) company Megvii's plans for a $500 million Hong Kong initial public offering (IPO) are back on track after its application was cleared by the city's stock exchange, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter said. Megvii - which was blacklisted by the U.S. administration in October - was asked to provide more information in November when the company faced the Hong Kong Stock Exchange listing committee to seek the go-ahead for the transaction. Megvii, which is known for its facial recognition platform Face, is aiming to be the first Chinese AI firm to go public. The plan comes after the Trump administration in October placed Megvii on a banned trade list with seven other Chinese firms for their alleged involvement in human rights violations related to Beijing's treatment of Muslim minority populations in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region.
AI Starts Making Real Impact on CSPs' Decision Making, Diversification Intensifies - Predictions for 2020
In 2020, the nature of customer engagement will change as personalisation - how marketing and customer value management actually engage with customers - rapidly matures. This means a change will be required in legacy campaign and loyalty programme management solution architectures (i.e. a move from relational databases of static customer data and batch processes to a real-time online customer profiling and engagement triggering). Those Communications Service Providers (CSPs) who lead the way will tap the real benefits that can be achieved by moving to CE 3.0. Net Promoter Scores in the telecoms industry are low; yet to date there's been relatively little analysis of why. One change lies in clearer answers to the question "Does my operator give me value for my money?".
Automation, AI: schools prepping students for jobs of the future - Electronic Products & Technology
As automation and artificial intelligence continue to transform Canadian workplaces, post-secondary institutions across the country say they are working to prepare students for jobs that may not even exist yet. Climate change, data science and cybersecurity are increasingly in the spotlight at Canadian universities as they adapt their offerings to address "the needs not only of a changing marketplace but of a changing society," Paul Davidson, president of the association Universities Canada, said in a recent interview. Forecasting can prove difficult, however. "There are numbers like 50 per cent of the jobs (of the future) have not yet been defined, and so how does any organization โฆ prepare for that kind of change?" A research paper released in 2018 showed half of Canadian jobs will be affected by automation in the next decade, and so-called "human skills" such as critical thinking and problem solving will be key to remaining competitive and resilient in an era of disruption and artificial intelligence.
New Trump Ruling Limits AI Surveillance Exports Over China Military Fears
The U.S. will step up its crackdown on China's surveillance industry this coming week, with further restrictions on the supply of American technology that will be in effect from January 6. The new regulations target the use of artificial intelligence in geospatial applications--essentially the detection and classification of objects from planes, drones and satellites. While many such applications are civilian in nature--geographical surveys, construction, town planning, the real focus is military and surveillance. Essentially, the U.S. does not want these technologies in enemy hands. The restrictions cover U.S. exports to all countries bar Canada, but the primary target is of course China and its world-leading AI surveillance industry.
