Time is ripe for legislation containing compulsory'pre-litigation mediation': CJI NEW DELHI: Chief Justice of India S A Bobde on Saturday said the time is ripe to devise a comprehensive legislation which contains "compulsory pre-litigation mediation" that would ensure efficiency and reduce the time of pendency for parties as well as courts. Speaking at the 3rd edition of of an international conference on'Arbitration in the Era of Globalisation', Justice Bobde said a robust "arbitration bar" is critical to the development of institutional arbitration in India as it would ensure availability and accessibility of practitioners with knowledge and experience. Justice Bobde said that today arbitration plays an essential role in the global infrastructure of international trade, commerce and investment and as an integral member of the global community and a trading and investment giant, how India engages with international arbitration has important ramifications on international trans-boundary flows of trade, commerce and investments as a whole. "The pre-institution mediation and settlement as mentioned in the Commercial Courts Act would pave the way for many more institutions to emphasize on the need of pre-litigation mediation considering its very many benefits. "I think the time is ripe to devise a comprehensive legislation which contains compulsory pre-litigation mediation and a remedy for the biggest drawback in a mediation agreement that is to say the unenforceability of an agreement arrived at a mediation would ensure efficiency and also reduce the time pendency for parties as well as the courts," he said. While talking about India's role in international arbitration, Justice Bobde said, "In recent times, globalisation has led to the dramatic growth in cross-border transactions involving India, which has led to an increasing demand for cross-border arbitration.

It's game on for 'Mythic Quest': Apple TV comedy series set inside a video-game studio

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

A video game development studio is about to launch an eagerly anticipated expansion to its popular role-playing game. This is hardly a typical premise you'd expect out of a TV show, yet it's precisely what you'll find in "Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet," a new streaming comedy series on Apple TV Plus. All nine half-hour episodes of the first season debuted Friday. Co-created by Rob McElhenney, Megan Ganz and Charlie Day (of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" fame), "Mythic Quest" might best be described as "The Office" meets gamer culture – both in the way it's shot (often with documentary-style camera pushes) and in the hilarious contrast between disparate personalities under pressure to deliver another hit. The formula works, mostly because of the cast's obvious chemistry, but also the smart writing, clever direction and faithful peek behind the scenes at a game studio today.

When Bias Is Coded Into Our Technology

NPR Technology

Facial recognition systems from large tech companies often incorrectly classify black women as male -- including the likes of Michelle Obama, Serena Williams and Sojourner Truth. That's according to Joy Buolamwini, whose research caught wide attention in 2018 with "AI, Ain't I a Woman?" a spoken-word piece based on her findings at MIT Media Lab. The video, along with the accompanying research paper written with Timnit Gebru of Microsoft Research, prompted many tech companies to reassess their facial recognition data sets and algorithms for darker and more female-looking faces. "Coded Bias," a documentary directed by Shalini Kantayya which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in late January, interweaves Buolamwini's journey of creating the Algorithmic Justice League, an advocacy organization, with other examples of facial recognition software being rolled out around the world -- on the streets of London, in housing projects in Brooklyn and broadly across China. Jennifer 8. Lee, a journalist and documentary producer, caught up with Joy Buolamwini and Shalini Kantayya in Park City, Utah after the premiere of Coded Bias.

Jeff Kagan: Can New IBM CEO Re-Ignite Watson AI Growth?

#artificialintelligence

Every time a company changes its CEO, many changes always follow. Some of those changes are positive. I expect this to happen at IBM as Ginni Rometty steps down and Arvind Krishna steps up as CEO. Let's take a look at the challenges he faces and what we can expect as investors, customers and workers. I have been following IBM for quite a long time.

IBM names Arvind Krishna as its new CEO

#artificialintelligence

Indian-origin technology executive Arvind Krishna has been named as the chief executive officer of American IT giant International Business Machines (IBM). The IBM Board of Directors elected Krishna as company CEO and member of the Board of Directors effective April 6 2020. Krishna is currently IBM senior vice president for cloud and cognitive software. "I am thrilled and humbled to be elected as the next chief executive officer of IBM," says Krishna. "IBM has such talented people and technology that we can bring together to help our clients solve their toughest problems," he added. Arvind Krishna's story is similar to those of many Indians in the US tech industry -- he finished a degree from IIT Kanpur, before moving to the US to complete his PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

How AI has helped improve Google Maps ZDNet

#artificialintelligence

Since its launch 15 years ago, Google Maps has evolved from a tool to help you find your destination to a destination in and of itself. To commemorate its 15 years, Google this week is giving Maps an update and sharing insight into how technologies like AI have helped make Maps more useful and engaging. "Major breakthroughs in AI have transformed our approach to mapmaking, helping us bring high-quality maps and local information to more parts of the world faster," Jen Fitzpatrick, SVP of Google Maps, wrote in a blog post published Thursday. What is AI? Everything you need to know about Artificial Intelligence For instance, using machine learning Google added as many buildings to Maps in 2019 as it did using all techniques in the previous decade. Google's Maps team worked with its data operations team to manually trace common building outlines, Fitzpatrick explained.

All it takes to fool facial recognition at airports and border crossings is a printed mask, researchers found

#artificialintelligence

Facial recognition is being widely embraced as a security tool -- law enforcement and corporations alike are rolling it out to keep tabs on who's accessing airports, stores, and smartphones. As it turns out, the technology is fallible. Researchers with the artificial-intelligence firm Kneron announced that they were able to fool some facial-recognition systems using a printed mask depicting a different person's face. The researchers, who tested systems across three continents, said they fooled payment tablets run by the Chinese companies Alipay and WeChat, as well as a system at a border checkpoint in China. In Amsterdam, a printed mask fooled facial recognition at a passport-control gate at Schiphol Airport, they said.
