When people hear about the race for Artificial Intelligence (AI) dominance, they often think that the main competition is between the US and China. After all, the US and China have most of the largest and most well funded AI companies on the planet, and the pace of funding, company growth, and adoption doesn't seem to be slowing anytime soon. However, if you look closely, you'll see that many other countries have a stake in the AI race, and indeed, some countries have AI efforts, funding, technologies, and intellectual property that make them serious contenders in the jostling for AI dominance. In fact according to a recent report from analyst firm Cognilytica, France, Israel, United Kingdom, and the United States all are equally strong when it comes to AI, with China, Canada, Germany, Japan, and South Korea equally close in their AI strategic strength. The Squirrel AI Award for Artificial Intelligence for the Benefit of Humanity recognizes positive impacts of artificial intelligence to protect, enhance, and improve human life in meaningful ways with long-lived effects. The award will be given annually at the conference for the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) in February, and is accompanied by a prize of $1,000,000 plus travel expenses to the conference. Financial support for the award is provided by Squirrel AI. The award will be given for the first time in 2021. Candidates may be individuals, groups, or organizations that are directly connected with the main contribution stated in the nomination.

These mechanisms emerge as a response to patterns in the environment or enable us to refine our ability to spot them. Pattern recognition skills sit at the helm of our basic cognitive architecture. A common problem during hunting is to estimate how many predators there are – based on cues like animal sounds, footprints, etc. Say a pack of 4 hunters is trying to isolate a prey for food. Auto companies are using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to identify potential buyers from among the walk-ins and enquiries in showrooms. They are also gauging consumer reaction to new models and concept cars through facial recognition systems. Maruti's Mobility and Automobile Innovation Lab (MAIL) is identifying start-ups that can help it solve some of its operational problems. One of the start-ups from Karnataka is helping Maruti to identify leads among the plethora of queries and walk-ins that each of their dealers receive in a day. "We receive one million enquiries a month. The start-up is helping us identify the probability of purchase among them," said Shashank Srivastava, executive director, sales and marketing of MSIL.

Hayden AI creates smart city solutions purposely built for modern traffic conditions and increased urbanization. Their team originates from the autonomous vehicle space with domain experience in deep learning, computer vision, and mapping. Chris Carson, Cofounder & CEO, Hayden AI, introduced the company accordingly: "Our antiquated roads are being choked by modern technology. There's no integration of the old ways and new, and sadly, it's not just a matter of being inconvenienced, as citizens are suffering.
