Jeff Bezos' New AI Venture Quietly Acquired an Agentic Computing Startup Project Prometheus has raised over $6 billion in funding and hired over 100 employees, a handful of whom joined through its acquisition of General Agents, according to records and sources. In early June, tech entrepreneur Vik Bajaj took over Saison, a two-Michelin star restaurant in San Francisco, for an off-the-record dinner to talk about AI with journalists and a handful of scientists. In attendance was Sherjil Ozair, a late addition who had previously held senior research roles at DeepMind and Tesla . The following day, Bajaj and Ozair were on their way to making a deal, public records show. Bajaj didn't mention it at the dinner, but earlier this year he had begun working with Amazon executive chairman Jeff Bezos on a new AI venture called Project Prometheus.

Nvidia has claimed it is a generation ahead of rivals in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry amid growing suggestions a rival may emerge to threaten to its market dominance - and multi-trillion dollar valuation. Shares in the chip giant fell on Tuesday, following a report Meta planned to spend billions on AI chips developed by Google to power its data centres. In a statement on X, Nvidia, the world's most valuable company, said it was the only platform which runs every AI model and does it everywhere computing is done. In response, Google said it was committed to supporting both its own and Nvidia's chips. Nvidia's chips have become a critical part of powering the data centres behind many of the most popular AI tools, such as ChatGPT.

Warner settles lawsuit with AI music firm and launches joint venture

Warner Music Group (WMG) will begin an artificial intelligence (AI) music venture with technology start-up Suno - a year after it sued the firm in a landmark case. As part of the settlement agreement struck between the two firms, Warner will let users create AI-generated music on Suno using the voices, names and likeness of artists who opt-in to the programme. The record label, which represents artists like Dua Lipa, Coldplay and Ed Sheeran, was among several music giants like Sony Music that sued Suno and a similar platform called Udio. AI-generated content has been controversial, with many artists voicing concerns that it could undermine human songwriters. Starting next year, Suno will roll out new advanced and licensed models to its generative-AI music platform, which allows users to create music based on simple descriptions, said Warner in a statement .

Since the launch of ChatGPT three years ago, analysts and technologists -- even a Google engineer and the company's former chief executive -- have declared Google behind in the high-stakes race to develop artificial intelligence. The internet giant has released new AI software and struck deals, such as a chip tie-up with Anthropic PBC, that have reassured investors the company won't easily lose to ChatGPT creator OpenAI and other rivals. Google's newest multipurpose model, Gemini 3, won immediate praise for its capabilities in reasoning and coding, as well as niche tasks that have tripped up AI chatbots. Google's cloud business, once an also-ran, is growing steadily, thanks in part to the global rush to develop AI services and demand for compute.


Heckman Selection Contaminated Normal Model

The Heckman selection model is one of the most well-renounced econometric models in the analysis of data with sample selection. This model is designed to rectify sample selection biases based on the assumption of bivariate normal error terms. However, real data diverge from this assumption in the presence of heavy tails and/or atypical observations. Recently, this assumption has been relaxed via a more flexible Student's t-distribution, which has appealing statistical properties. This paper introduces a novel Heckman selection model using a bivariate contaminated normal distribution for the error terms. We present an efficient ECM algorithm for parameter estimation with closed-form expressions at the E-step based on truncated multinormal distribution formulas. The identifiability of the proposed model is also discussed, and its properties have been examined. Through simulation studies, we compare our proposed model with the normal and Student's t counterparts and investigate the finite-sample properties and the variation in missing rate. Results obtained from two real data analyses showcase the usefulness and effectiveness of our model. The proposed algorithms are implemented in the R package HeckmanEM.


Synthetic Data: AI's New Weapon Against Android Malware

The ever-increasing number of Android devices and the accelerated evolution of malware, reaching over 35 million samples by 2024, highlight the critical importance of effective detection methods. Attackers are now using Artificial Intelligence to create sophisticated malware variations that can easily evade traditional detection techniques. Although machine learning has shown promise in malware classification, its success relies heavily on the availability of up-to-date, high-quality datasets. The scarcity and high cost of obtaining and labeling real malware samples presents significant challenges in developing robust detection models. In this paper, we propose MalSynGen, a Malware Synthetic Data Generation methodology that uses a conditional Generative Adversarial Network (cGAN) to generate synthetic tabular data. This data preserves the statistical properties of real-world data and improves the performance of Android malware classifiers. We evaluated the effectiveness of this approach using various datasets and metrics that assess the fidelity of the generated data, its utility in classification, and the computational efficiency of the process. Our experiments demonstrate that MalSynGen can generalize across different datasets, providing a viable solution to address the issues of obsolescence and low quality data in malware detection. With approximately 3 billion Android devices in operation worldwide [1], the mobile cybersecurity landscape faces formidable challenges. In 2024 alone, Kaspersky reported over 33.3 million cyberattacks targeting smartphone users globally, encompassing diverse forms of malware and unwanted software [2]. Adding to this problem, attackers are using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to rapidly generate new malware variants by exploiting patterns learned from existing malware [3].
