Fast Traversability Estimation for Wild Visual Navigation

Natural environments such as forests and grasslands are challenging for robotic navigation because of the false perception of rigid obstacles from high grass, twigs, or bushes. In this work, we propose Wild Visual Navigation (WVN), an online self-supervised learning system for traversability estimation which uses only vision. The system is able to continuously adapt from a short human demonstration in the field. It leverages high-dimensional features from self-supervised visual transformer models, with an online scheme for supervision generation that runs in real-time on the robot. We demonstrate the advantages of our approach with experiments and ablation studies in challenging environments in forests, parks, and grasslands. Our system is able to bootstrap the traversable terrain segmentation in less than 5 min of in-field training time, enabling the robot to navigate in complex outdoor terrains - negotiating obstacles in high grass as well as a 1.4 km footpath following. While our experiments were executed with a quadruped robot, ANYmal, the approach presented can generalize to any ground robot.
On the Origins of Bias in NLP through the Lens of the Jim Code

In this paper, we trace the biases in current natural language processing (NLP) models back to their origins in racism, sexism, and homophobia over the last 500 years. We review literature from critical race theory, gender studies, data ethics, and digital humanities studies, and summarize the origins of bias in NLP models from these social science perspective. We show how the causes of the biases in the NLP pipeline are rooted in social issues. Finally, we argue that the only way to fix the bias and unfairness in NLP is by addressing the social problems that caused them in the first place and by incorporating social sciences and social scientists in efforts to mitigate bias in NLP models. We provide actionable recommendations for the NLP research community to do so.
Hybrid and Collaborative Passage Reranking

In passage retrieval system, the initial passage retrieval results may be unsatisfactory, which can be refined by a reranking scheme. Existing solutions to passage reranking focus on enriching the interaction between query and each passage separately, neglecting the context among the top-ranked passages in the initial retrieval list. To tackle this problem, we propose a Hybrid and Collaborative Passage Reranking (HybRank) method, which leverages the substantial similarity measurements of upstream retrievers for passage collaboration and incorporates the lexical and semantic properties of sparse and dense retrievers for reranking. Besides, built on off-the-shelf retriever features, HybRank is a plug-in reranker capable of enhancing arbitrary passage lists including previously reranked ones. Extensive experiments demonstrate the stable improvements of performance over prevalent retrieval and reranking methods, and verify the effectiveness of the core components of HybRank.
'It doesn't work': Migrants struggle with US immigration app
Tijuana, Mexico – Standing in a common area of the Casa del Migrante shelter in the Mexican border city of Tijuana, Maria taps her phone screen but can't get the app she is using to work. Maria and her family fled their native Haiti to Venezuela years ago. But recent Venezuelan economic and political instability forced them to leave that country, too, and she said they are now hoping to apply for asylum in the United States. But she and her husband and daughter have tried every day for the last month to get a US immigration appointment through the country's new CBP One app -- to no avail. And without a CBP One appointment, the family faces steep consequences should they try to cross the border irregularly, including being deported back to Haiti and barred from entering the US for up to five years.
Pre-Training to Learn in Context

In-context learning, where pre-trained language models learn to perform tasks from task examples and instructions in their contexts, has attracted much attention in the NLP community. However, the ability of in-context learning is not fully exploited because language models are not explicitly trained to learn in context. To this end, we propose PICL (Pre-training for In-Context Learning), a framework to enhance the language models' in-context learning ability by pre-training the model on a large collection of "intrinsic tasks" in the general plain-text corpus using the simple language modeling objective. PICL encourages the model to infer and perform tasks by conditioning on the contexts while maintaining task generalization of pre-trained models. We evaluate the in-context learning performance of the model trained with PICL on seven widely-used text classification datasets and the Super-NaturalInstrctions benchmark, which contains 100+ NLP tasks formulated to text generation. Our experiments show that PICL is more effective and task-generalizable than a range of baselines, outperforming larger language models with nearly 4x parameters. Weight-Inherited Distillation for Task-Agnostic BERT Compression

Knowledge Distillation (KD) is a predominant approach for BERT compression. Previous KD-based methods focus on designing extra alignment losses for the student model to mimic the behavior of the teacher model. These methods transfer the knowledge in an indirect way. In this paper, we propose a novel Weight-Inherited Distillation (WID), which directly transfers knowledge from the teacher. WID does not require any additional alignment loss and trains a compact student by inheriting the weights, showing a new perspective of knowledge distillation. Specifically, we design the row compactors and column compactors as mappings and then compress the weights via structural re-parameterization. Experimental results on the GLUE and SQuAD benchmarks show that WID outperforms previous state-of-the-art KD-based baselines. Further analysis indicates that WID can also learn the attention patterns from the teacher model without any alignment loss on attention distributions.
Legal Extractive Summarization of U.S. Court Opinions

This paper tackles the task of legal extractive summarization using a dataset of 430K U.S. court opinions with key passages annotated. According to automated summary quality metrics, the reinforcement-learning-based MemSum model is best and even out-performs transformer-based models. In turn, expert human evaluation shows that MemSum summaries effectively capture the key points of lengthy court opinions. Motivated by these results, we open-source our models to the general public. This represents progress towards democratizing law and making U.S. court opinions more accessible to the general public.
What's the Meaning of Superhuman Performance in Today's NLU?

In the last five years, there has been a significant focus in Natural Language Processing (NLP) on developing larger Pretrained Language Models (PLMs) and introducing benchmarks such as SuperGLUE and SQuAD to measure their abilities in language understanding, reasoning, and reading comprehension. These PLMs have achieved impressive results on these benchmarks, even surpassing human performance in some cases. This has led to claims of superhuman capabilities and the provocative idea that certain tasks have been solved. In this position paper, we take a critical look at these claims and ask whether PLMs truly have superhuman abilities and what the current benchmarks are really evaluating. We show that these benchmarks have serious limitations affecting the comparison between humans and PLMs and provide recommendations for fairer and more transparent benchmarks.
Evaluating Splitting Approaches in the Context of Student Dropout Prediction

The prediction of academic dropout, with the aim of preventing it, is one of the current challenges of higher education institutions. Machine learning techniques are a great ally in this task. However, attention is needed in the way that academic data are used by such methods, so that it reflects the reality of the prediction problem under study and allows achieving good results. In this paper, we study strategies for splitting and using academic data in order to create training and testing sets. Through a conceptual analysis and experiments with data from a public higher education institution, we show that a random proportional data splitting, and even a simple temporal splitting are not suitable for dropout prediction. The study indicates that a temporal splitting combined with a time-based selection of the students' incremental academic histories leads to the best strategy for the problem in question.
Automatic learning algorithm selection for classification via convolutional neural networks

As in any other task, the process of building machine learning models can benefit from prior experience. Meta-learning for classifier selection gains knowledge from characteristics of different datasets and/or previous performance of machine learning techniques to make better decisions for the current modeling process. Meta-learning approaches first collect meta-data that describe this prior experience and then use it as input for an algorithm selection model. In this paper, however, we propose an automatic learning scheme in which we train convolutional networks directly with the information of tabular datasets for binary classification. The goal of this study is to learn the inherent structure of the data without identifying meta-features. Experiments with simulated datasets show that the proposed approach achieves nearly perfect performance in identifying linear and nonlinear patterns, outperforming the traditional two-step method based on meta-features. The proposed method is then applied to real-world datasets, making suggestions about the best classifiers that can be considered based on the structure of the data.
