State Defaults and Ramifications in the Unifying Action Calculus

We present a framework for reasoning about actions that not only solves the frame and ramification problems, but also the state default problem—the problem to determine what normally holds at a given time point. Yet, the framework is general enough not to be tied to a specific time structure. This is achieved as follows: We use effect axioms that draw ideas both from Reiter's successor state axioms and the non-monotonic causal theories by Giunchiglia et al. These axioms are formulated in a recently proposed unifying action calculus to guarantee independence of a specific underlying notion of time. Reiter's default logic is then wrapped around the resulting calculus and plays a key role in solving the ramification as well as the state default problem.


Finding the Next Solution in Constraint- and Preference-Based Knowledge Representation Formalisms

In constraint or preference reasoning, a typical task is to compute a solution, or an optimal solution. However, when one has already a solution, it may be important to produce the next solution following the given one in a linearization of the solution ordering where more preferred solutions are ordered first. In this paper, we study the computational complexity of finding the next solution in some common preference-based representation formalisms. We show that this problem is hard in general CSPs, but it can be easy in tree-shaped CSPs and tree-shaped fuzzy CSPs. However, it is difficult in weighted CSPs, even if we restrict the shape of the constraint graph. We also consider CP-nets, showing that the problem is easy in acyclic CP-nets, as well as in constrained acyclic CP-nets where the (soft) constraints are tree-shaped and topologically compatible with the CP-net.


Generalized Planning with Loops under Strong Fairness Constraints

We consider a generalized form of planning, possibly involving loops, that arises in nondeterministic domains when ex- plicit strong fairness constraints are asserted over the planning domain. Such constraints allow us to specify the necessity of occurrence of selected effects of nondeterministic actions over domain’s runs. Also they are particularly meaningful from the technical point of view because they exhibit the expressiveness advantage of LTL over CTL in verification. We show that planning for reachability and maintenance goals is EXPTIME-complete in this setting, that is, it has the same complexity as conditional planning in nondeterministic domains (without strong fairness constraints). We also show that within the EXPTIME bound one can solve the more general problems of realizing agent planning programs as well as composition-based planning in the presence of strong fairness constraints.


One Hundred Prisoners and a Lightbulb — Logic and Computation

This is a case-study in knowledge representation. We analyze the 'one hundred prisoners and a lightbulb' puzzle. In this puzzle it is relevant what the agents (prisoners) know, how their knowledge changes due to observations, and how they affect the state of the world by changing facts, i.e., by their actions. These actions depend on the history of previous actions and observations. Part of its interest is that all actions are local, i.e. not publicly observable, and part of the problem is therefore how to disseminate local results to other agents, and make them global. The various solutions to the puzzle are presented as protocols (iterated functions from agent's local states, and histories of actions, to actions). The computational aspect is about average runtime termination under conditions of random ('fair') scheduling. The paper consists of three parts. First, we present different versions of the puzzle, and their solution. This includes a probabilistic version, and a version assuming synchronicity (the interval between prisoners' interrogations is known). The latter is very informative for the prisoners, and allows different protocols (with faster expected termination). Then, we model the puzzle in an epistemic logic incorporating dynamic operators for the effects of information changing events. Such events include both informative actions, where agents become more informed about the non-changing state of the world, and factual changes, wherein the world and the facts describing it change themselves as well. Finally, we give the expected termination results of several protocols when assuming random scheduling. This paper integrates the literature and presents novel contributions. Novel are: Firstly, Protocol 2 and Protocol 4. Secondly, the modelling in dynamic epistemic logic in its entirety - we do not know of a case study that combines factual and informational dynamics in a setting of non-public events, or of a similar proposal to handle asynchronous behaviour in a dynamic epistemic logic. Thirdly, our computational results on Protocol 2 and results from the manuscript from author Wu.


Integrating Action Calculi and AgentSpeak: Closing the Gap

Existing action calculi provide rich, declarative formalisms for reasoning about actions. BDI-based programming languages like AgentSpeak, on the other hand, are procedural and geared towards practical applications of cognitive agents. In this paper, we close the gap between these two lines of research by integrating action calculi and AgentSpeak programs. Specifically, we develop a new and purely declarative semantics for AgentSpeak, which paves the way for combining this language with any suitable action calculus in a strictly modular fashion. As the main technical result, we prove that the new declarative semantics is correct wrt. the standard operational semantics for AgentSpeak. This provides the basis for a modular integration of a BDI-based agent programming language with sophisticated methods for reasoning about actions.


New Advances in Sequential Diagnosis

Sequential diagnosis takes measurements of an abnormal system to identify faulty components, where the goal is to reduce the diagnostic cost , defined here as the number of measurements. To propose measurement points, previous work employs a heuristic based on reducing the entropy over a set of diagnoses , which can be impractical when the set of diagnoses is too large. Focusing on a smaller set of probable diagnoses scales the approach but generally leads to increased diagnostic cost. We propose a new diagnostic framework employing three new techniques — a more efficient heuristic for measurement point selection, abstraction-based sequential diagnosis, and component cloning — which scales to large systems with good performance in terms of diagnostic cost.


The Joy of Forgetting: Faster Anytime Search via Restarting

Anytime search algorithms solve optimisation problems by quickly finding a (usually suboptimal) first solution and then finding improved solutions when given additional time. To deliver an initial solution quickly, they are typically greedy with respect to the heuristic cost-to-go estimate h. In this paper, we show that this low-h bias can cause poor performance if the greedy search makes early mistakes. Building on this observation, we present a new anytime approach that restarts the search from the initial state every time a new solution is found. We demonstrate the utility of our method via experiments in PDDL planning as well as other domains, and show that it is particularly useful for problems where the heuristic has systematic errors.


Cost-Optimal Factored Planning: Promises and Pitfalls

Factored planning methods aim to exploit locality to efficiently solve large but "loosely coupled" planning problems by computing solutions locally and propagating limited information between components. However, all factored planning methods presented so far work with representations that require certain parameters to be bounded (e.g. number of coordination points between local plans considered); the satisfaction of those bounds by a given problem instance is difficult to establish a priori, and the influence of those parameters on the problem complexity is unclear. We present an instance of the factored planning framework using a representation of the (regular) sets of local plans by finite automata, which does not require any such bound. By substituting weighted automata, we can even do factored cost-optimal planning. We test an implementation of the method on the few standard planning benchmarks that we have found to be amenable to factoring. We show that this method runs in polynomial time under conditions similar to those considered in previous work, but not only under those conditions. Thus, what constitutes an essential measure of "factorability" remains obscure.


Reasoning About the Transfer of Control

We present DCL-PC: a logic for reasoning about how the abilities of agents and coalitions of agents are altered by transferring control from one agent to another. The logical foundation of DCL-PC is CL-PC, a logic for reasoning about cooperation in which the abilities of agents and coalitions of agents stem from a distribution of atomic Boolean variables to individual agents -- the choices available to a coalition correspond to assignments to the variables the coalition controls. The basic modal constructs of DCL-PC are of the form `coalition C can cooperate to bring about phi'. DCL-PC extends CL-PC with dynamic logic modalities in which atomic programs are of the form `agent i gives control of variable p to agent j'; as usual in dynamic logic, these atomic programs may be combined using sequence, iteration, choice, and test operators to form complex programs. By combining such dynamic transfer programs with cooperation modalities, it becomes possible to reason about how the power of agents and coalitions is affected by the transfer of control. We give two alternative semantics for the logic: a `direct' semantics, in which we capture the distributions of Boolean variables to agents; and a more conventional Kripke semantics. We prove that these semantics are equivalent, and then present an axiomatization for the logic. We investigate the computational complexity of model checking and satisfiability for DCL-PC, and show that both problems are PSPACE-complete (and hence no worse than the underlying logic CL-PC). Finally, we investigate the characterisation of control in DCL-PC. We distinguish between first-order control -- the ability of an agent or coalition to control some state of affairs through the assignment of values to the variables under the control of the agent or coalition -- and second-order control -- the ability of an agent to exert control over the control that other agents have by transferring variables to other agents. We give a logical characterisation of second-order control.


Training a Multilingual Sportscaster: Using Perceptual Context to Learn Language

We present a novel framework for learning to interpret and generate language using only perceptual context as supervision. We demonstrate its capabilities by developing a system that learns to sportscast simulated robot soccer games in both English and Korean without any language-specific prior knowledge. Training employs only ambiguous supervision consisting of a stream of descriptive textual comments and a sequence of events extracted from the simulation trace. The system simultaneously establishes correspondences between individual comments and the events that they describe while building a translation model that supports both parsing and generation. We also present a novel algorithm for learning which events are worth describing. Human evaluations of the generated commentaries indicate they are of reasonable quality and in some cases even on par with those produced by humans for our limited domain.
