Nuclear physics conference accepts nonsensical 'autocomplete' study
Next month, Dr. Iris Pear will present her groundbreaking new study at the International Conference on Atomic and Nuclear Physics. Iris Pear โ a play on "Siri Apple" โ is the invention of Christophe Bartneck, an associate professor of computer science at New Zealand's University of Canterbury. The study in question is completely nonsensical, procedurally generated by iOS's autocomplete function. Why, then, did a conference for "leading academic scientists" select it for presentation? On Thursday, Dr. Bartneck received an invitation to submit research for an upcoming conference on nuclear physics.
AI expert: Super-smart cars are just a glorious beginning
Udacity President Sebastian Thrun spoke Thursday at Vanity Fair's New Establishment Summit. Prepare for your car to become an intellectual giant -- and for you to like it. In a highly optimistic forecast at the Vanity Fair New Establishment Summit in San Francisco, computer scientist Sebastian Thrun said artificial intelligence will radically reshape our lives for the better. "In the last 200 or 300 years, we have made ourselves into superhumans," able to plow a field a thousand times faster than our ancestors, fly across the Atlantic Ocean and talk to a person in Australia from thousands of miles away, he said. Artificial intelligence will take us to the next step: "Rather than replacing our muscles, we're going to be making our brains stronger."
ARE DATING APPS SAFE? Experts describe the risks of meeting 'the one' online
An Australian man was acquitted Thursday in the murder of a young woman who fell from his balcony two years ago after the two met through the popular dating app Tinder. What, exactly, caused 26-year-old Warriena Wright to plunge 14 stories is not known, but the encounter between the couple -- much of which was captured on an audio tape -- has prompted the question: Are mobile dating apps safe? The answer is complicated, according to dating experts and behavioral psychologists. "These incidents are very rare," said Sameera Sullivan, a relationship expert and psychologist who founded the matchmaking service, Lasting Connections, in 2012. "There's always going to be bad people out there," said Sullivan.
Microsoft Sees a Future in AI - Smarter With Gartner
Does it seem like your virtual personal assistant (VPA) knows everything about your life? Microsoft's Cortana can give you reminders, track packages, send emails or texts, keep track of your flights and even remind you to say happy birthday to your cousin next time she calls. According to Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, developers made deliberate design decisions with customers in mind as the company moves into the world of artificial intelligence (AI). "When it comes to AI, the fundamental vision I have is that AI will be infused into everything," Mr. Nadella said in the Mastermind Interview at Gartner Symposium/ITxpo 2016 in Orlando. "The currency going forward is going to be how to build trust in technology so that people and organizations are comfortable using more technology, and I think that's one of the pressing issues of our time," he said.
ICYMI: Orbital space junk is putting us in jeopardy
Today on In Case You Missed It: The US Air Force is moving its Space Surveillance Telescope to Australia to track space junk littering geosynchronous orbit. That's the orbit 22,000 miles away from our planet where satellites mirror the Earth's rotation so that they don't appear to move. The Department of Justice story about facial recognition is here, while that darling sneezing baby (who eschews costumes) is here. If you enjoy the cartoon humor that is an engine giving up on a job, that's here. As always, please share any interesting tech or science videos you find by using the #ICYMI hashtag on Twitter for @mskerryd.

In order to protect the world's iconic marine wildlife including whales, sea turtles and sharks, we first have to understand their biology. However, this is often easier said than done. In this 45-minute interactive lesson, students will be taken around the world to learn about new and exciting ways that marine scientists are uncovering the lives of these elusive creatures. Track humpback whales as they feed in Alaska, and come along for the ride as video cameras are deployed on sea turtles in Western Australia. The lesson uses photos and videos from a variety of active research projects, begins with historical context about human impacts on marine wildlife populations and ends with a discussion of what students can do in their lives to help learn about and protect our oceans.
Stephen Hawking has a terrifying warning about Artificial Intelligence and the future of humanity
Stephen Hawking has warned artificial intelligence could be the greatest disaster in human history if it is not properly managed. The world famous physicist said AI could bring about serious peril in the creation of powerful autonomous weapons and novel ways for those in power to oppress and control the masses. Hawking suggested AI could be the last event in the history of our civilisation if humanity did not learn to cope with the risks it posed. But the cosmologist and professor also said AI could have great benefits and potentially erase poverty and disease. Gable Tostee not guilty in Australia 'Tinder death'
An Australian man has been acquitted of the murder of a New Zealand woman during their first Tinder date. Gable Tostee, 30, was charged after Warriena Wright, 26, fell from his balcony in Queensland's Gold Coast in August 2014. Prosecutors argued that she was so intimidated that she tried to escape by climbing to a lower floor, but fell. After four days of deliberation, the jury found him not guilty of murder and manslaughter. Defence lawyer Nick Dore said outside the court that his client was "relieved this matter is now behind him and he's looking forward to moving on with his life".
