More than 1,000 Amazon workers warn rapid AI rollout threatens jobs and climate
Workers say the firm's'warp-speed' approach fuels pressure, layoffs and rising emissions More than 1,000 Amazon employees have signed an open letter expressing "serious concerns" about AI development, saying that the company's "all-costs justified, warp speed" approach The letter, published on Wednesday, was signed by the Amazon workers anonymously, and comes a month after Amazon announced mass layoff plans as it increases adoption of AI in its operations. Among the signatories are staffers in a range of positions, including engineers, product managers and warehouse associates. Reflecting broader AI concerns across the industry, the letter was also supported by more than 2,400 workers from companies including Meta, Google, Apple and Microsoft . The letter contains a range of demands for Amazon, concerning its impact on the workplace and the environment. Staffers are calling on the company to power all its data centers with clean energy, make sure its AI-powered products and services do not enable "violence, surveillance and mass deportation", and form a working group comprised of non-managers "that will have significant ownership over org-level goals and how or if AI should be used in their orgs, how or if AI-related layoffs or headcount freezes are implemented, and how to mitigate or minimize the collateral effects of AI use, such as environmental impact".
After a teddy bear talked about kink, AI watchdogs are warning parents against smart toys
'Children could become attached to a bot rather than a person or imaginary friend, which could hurt their development.' 'Children could become attached to a bot rather than a person or imaginary friend, which could hurt their development.' Advocates are fighting against the $16.7bn global smart-toy market, decrying surveillance and a lack of regulation As the holiday season looms into view with Black Friday, one category on people's gift lists is causing increasing concern: products with artificial intelligence. The development has raised new concerns about the dangers smart toys could pose to children, as consumer advocacy groups say AI could harm kids' safety and development. The trend has prompted calls for increased testing of such products and governmental oversight.
Cats became our companions way later than you think
In true feline style, cats took their time in deciding when and where to forge bonds with humans. According to new scientific evidence, the shift from wild hunter to pampered pet happened much more recently than previously thought - and in a different place. A study of bones found at archaeological sites suggests cats began their close relationship with humans only a few thousand years ago, and in northern Africa not the Levant. They are ubiquitous, we make TV programmes about them, and they dominate the internet, said Prof Greger Larson of the University of Oxford. That relationship we have with cats now only gets started about 3.5 or 4,000 years ago, rather than 10,000 years ago.

Chris Mason: Starmer could have scrapped child benefit cap last year - why did he wait?
Starmer could have scrapped child benefit cap last year - why did he wait? I can't remember when I last heard Sir Keir Starmer sounding so passionate. The prime minister's critics regularly lambast him for what they see as robotic or emotion-free communication, but you could not accuse him of that as we spoke on a post-Budget visit to a community centre in Rugby, Warwickshire. I could see it in his eyes and hear it in his tone. I have repeatedly said that I want my government to drive down child poverty.

Australia clamps downs on 'nudify' sites used for AI-generated child abuse
Australia clamps downs on'nudify' sites used for AI-generated child abuse Internet users in Australia have been blocked from accessing several websites that used artificial intelligence to create child sexual exploitation material, the country's internet regulator has announced. The three "nudify" sites withdrew from Australia following an official warning, eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said on Thursday. Grant said such "nudify" services, which allow users to make images of real people appear naked using AI, have had a "devastating" effect in Australian schools. "We took enforcement action in September because this provider failed to put in safeguards to prevent its services being used to create child sexual exploitation material and were even marketing features like undressing'any girl,' and with options for'schoolgirl' image generation and features such as'sex mode,'" Grand said in a statement. The development comes after Grant's office issued a formal warning to the United Kingdom-based company behind the sites in September, threatening civil penalties of up to 49.5 million Australian dollars ($32.2m) if it did not introduce safeguards to prevent image-based abuse.
Wavelet-Guided Water-Level Estimation for ISAC
Salari, Ayoob, Wu, Kai, Masood, Khawaja Fahad, Guo, Y. Jay, Zhang, J. Andrew
Real-time water-level monitoring across many locations is vital for flood response, infrastructure management, and environmental forecasting. Yet many sensing methods rely on fixed instruments - acoustic, radar, camera, or pressure probes - that are costly to install and maintain and are vulnerable during extreme events. We propose a passive, low-cost water-level tracking scheme that uses only LTE downlink power metrics reported by commodity receivers. The method extracts per-antenna RSRP, RSSI, and RSRQ, applies a continuous wavelet transform (CWT) to the RSRP to isolate the semidiurnal tide component, and forms a summed-coefficient signature that simultaneously marks high/low tide (tide-turn times) and tracks the tide-rate (flow speed) over time. These wavelet features guide a lightweight neural network that learns water-level changes over time from a short training segment. Beyond a single serving base station, we also show a multi-base-station cooperative mode: independent CWTs are computed per carrier and fused by a robust median to produce one tide-band feature that improves stability and resilience to local disturbances. Experiments over a 420 m river path under line-of-sight conditions achieve root-mean-square and mean-absolute errors of 0.8 cm and 0.5 cm, respectively. Under a non-line-of-sight setting with vegetation and vessel traffic, the same model transfers successfully after brief fine-tuning, reaching 1.7 cm RMSE and 0.8 cm MAE. Unlike CSI-based methods, the approach needs no array calibration and runs on standard hardware, making wide deployment practical. When signals from multiple base stations are available, fusion further improves robustness.
