AI labs are toying with an industry-wide pact to slow development. Meanwhile, widely available AI chatbots are already helping uncover a tidal wave of security flaws. AI doomers have recently traded one worst-case scenario for another, putting aside a potential software vulnerability apocalypse to focus on the possibility of rogue AI causing mass human death in the next decade. As AI leaders consider a cooperative slowdown on frontier model development, though, one aspect of the cybersecurity sea change has already arrived thanks to existing, broadly available capabilities in mainstream AI products, including open weight models. A tidal wave of vulnerabilities uncovered using AI has only accelerated in recent months--piling more pressure on under-resourced, and very human, IT and security teams and straining volunteers who maintain crucial open source software.

Is the war entering a new phase? Russian forces have launched widespread missile, drone, and artillery attacks across Ukraine, causing civilian casualties while hitting regional infrastructure and commercial shipping in the Black Sea. Ukraine's Air Force on Saturday reported facing a huge overnight barrage involving 174 drones from across Russia and Ukraine's annexed Crimean Peninsula, alongside two Zircon antiship missiles launched from Russia's Kursk region. "Enemy [Zircon antiship] missiles did not reach the targets," it said. Meanwhile, Russia's Ministry of Defence claimed its forces used Geran-4 Seeker loitering drones to strike two commercial vessels in the Black Sea - a Ukrainian dry cargo ship en route to Odesa and a docked tanker in the port of Odesa - asserting that both ships were carrying military supplies. In the Kharkiv region, Governor Oleh Syniehubov confirmed Russian attacks spanning 14 settlements killed five people and injured 15 others, causing heavy destruction in towns like Balakliya and Lypkuvativka.

Powerful AI models have created an existential risk to the field, but researchers can't stop relying on them because they're too useful. Mathematician Tristan Buckmaster believes OpenAI used his work to rush ahead and beat him to solving a legendary math problem with a $1 million bounty. But that's not been enough for him to stop using the company's models--and he's not the only mathematician that feels that way. "Even if you don't agree with any of this, you're kind of stuck. With AI being so useful, it's hard to completely prevent oneself from using it," Buckmaster tells WIRED.
