Can we design a machine which will simulate a brain? Speculation on these problems, which can be traced back many centuries, usually reflects in any period the characteristics of machines then in use. Descartes, in DeBomine, sees the lower animals and, in many of his functions, man as automata. Using analogies drawn from water-clocks, fountains and mechanical devices common to the seventeenth century, he imagined that the nerves transmitted signals by tiny mechanical motions.

Questions are asked and answered every day. Question answering (QA) technology aims to deliver the same facility online. It goes further than the more familiar search based on keywords (as in Google, Yahoo, and other search engines), in attempting to recognize what a question expresses and to respond with an actual answer. First, questions do not often translate into a simple list of keywords. For example, the question (1) Which countries did the pope visit in the 1960s? A much more complex set of keywords is needed in order to get anywhere close to the intended result, and experience shows that people will not learn how to formulate and use such sets. Second, QA takes responsibility for providing answers, rather than a searchable list of links to potentially relevant documents (web pages), highlighted by snippets of text that show how the query matched the documents. While this is not much of a burden when the answer appears in a snippet and further document access is unnecessary, QA technology aims to move this from being an accidental property of search to its focus. In keyword search and in much work to date on QA technology, the information seeking process has been seen as a one-shot affair: the user asks a question, and the system provides a satisfactory response. However, early work on QA (Section 1.1) did not make this assumption, and newly targeted applications are hindered by it: while a user may try to formulate a question whose answer is the information Question Answering 631 they want, they will not know whether they have succeeded until something has been returned for examination. If what is returned is unsatisfactory or, while not the answer, is still of interest, a user needs to be able to ask further questions that are understood in the context of the previous ones. For these target applications, QA must be part of a collaborative search process (Section 3.3). In the rest of this section, we give some historical background on QA systems (Section 1.1), on dialogue systems in which QA has played a significant role (Section 1.2), and on a particular QA task that has been a major driver of the field over the past 8 years (Section 1.3). Section 2 describes the current state of the art in QA systems, organized around the de facto architecture of such systems. Section 3 discusses some current directions in which QA is moving, including the development of interactive QA.





Discrete and fuzzy dynamical genetic programming in the XCSF learning classifier system

A number of representation schemes have been presented for use within learning classifier systems, ranging from binary encodings to neural networks. This paper presents results from an investigation into using discrete and fuzzy dynamical system representations within the XCSF learning classifier system. In particular, asynchronous random Boolean networks are used to represent the traditional condition-action production system rules in the discrete case and asynchronous fuzzy logic networks in the continuous-valued case. It is shown possible to use self-adaptive, open-ended evolution to design an ensemble of such dynamical systems within XCSF to solve a number of well-known test problems.


Bayesian Learning for Low-Rank matrix reconstruction

We develop latent variable models for Bayesian learning based low-rank matrix completion and reconstruction from linear measurements. For under-determined systems, the developed methods are shown to reconstruct low-rank matrices when neither the rank nor the noise power is known a-priori. We derive relations between the latent variable models and several low-rank promoting penalty functions. The relations justify the use of Kronecker structured covariance matrices in a Gaussian based prior. In the methods, we use evidence approximation and expectation-maximization to learn the model parameters. The performance of the methods is evaluated through extensive numerical simulations.


A New Efficient Method for Calculating Similarity Between Web Services

Web services allow communication between heterogeneous systems in a distributed environment. Their enormous success and their increased use led to the fact that thousands of Web services are present on the Internet. This significant number of Web services which not cease to increase has led to problems of the difficulty in locating and classifying web services, these problems are encountered mainly during the operations of web services discovery and substitution . T raditional ways of search based on keywords are not successful in this context, their results do not support the structure of Web services and they consider in their search only the identifiers of the web service description language ( WSDL) interface elements. The methods based on semantics (WSDLS, OWLS, SAWSDL…) which increase the WSDL description of a Web service with a semantic description allow raising partially this problem, but their complexity and difficulty delays their adoption in real case s . Measuring the similarity between the web services interfaces is the most suitable solution for this kind of problems, it will classify available web services so as to know those that best match the searched profile and those that do not match. Thus, the main goal of this work is to study the degree of similarity between any two web services by offering a new method that is more effective than existing work s .


Sketch and Validate for Big Data Clustering

In response to the need for learning tools tuned to big data analytics, the present paper introduces a framework for efficient clustering of huge sets of (possibly high-dimensional) data. Building on random sampling and consensus (RANSAC) ideas pursued earlier in a different (computer vision) context for robust regression, a suite of novel dimensionality and set-reduction algorithms is developed. The advocated sketch-and-validate (SkeVa) family includes two algorithms that rely on K-means clustering per iteration on reduced number of dimensions and/or feature vectors: The first operates in a batch fashion, while the second sequential one offers computational efficiency and suitability with streaming modes of operation. For clustering even nonlinearly separable vectors, the SkeVa family offers also a member based on user-selected kernel functions. Further trading off performance for reduced complexity, a fourth member of the SkeVa family is based on a divergence criterion for selecting proper minimal subsets of feature variables and vectors, thus bypassing the need for K-means clustering per iteration. Extensive numerical tests on synthetic and real data sets highlight the potential of the proposed algorithms, and demonstrate their competitive performance relative to state-of-the-art random projection alternatives.
