How did our sleep patterns evolve? Slumbering dragons offer clues.
Reptile sleep patterns might not actually be all that different from our own. Sleep patterns thought to be used only by mammals and birds have now been discovered in a non-avian reptile, the Australian bearded dragon. Finding those patterns, slow-wave sleep and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, in a reptile could dramatically revise scientists' models of how those sleep patterns evolved. And they may have evolved over 300 million years ago. "The status quo, until our study, was that these features of sleep only exist in mammals and in birds," Gilles Laurent, director for the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt, Germany and an author of the new paper announcing the findings in the journal Science on Thursday, tells The Christian Science Monitor in a phone interview.

A professor at Stanford University has designed a robotic humanoid diver with articulated hands that is designed to be an underwater avatar, exploring the way a human would-- while its driver remains safely up at the surface. The robot, which measures about five feet long, uses artificial intelligence and also a haptic feedback system to provide its controller with a feel for what the robot is holding. While the front part of the submersible resembles a human, the back part features computers, batteries, and thrusters. The machine, called OceanOne, was designed by Stanford computer science professor Oussama Khatib, who researches autonomous robots. "OceanOne is aimed at bringing a new capability for underwater exploration," Khatib said in a video showcasing the robot's abilities, in which it manipulates objects like a red basket.

But researchers from the Interactive Architecture Lab at University College London are exploring a future scenario where "cybernetic lifeforms" that are "half garden and half machine" roam our urban cityscapes, co-existing alongside us. OceanOne, created by researchers at Stanford University, combines artificial intelligence with human-controlled haptic feedback systems to carry out underwater tasks too dangerous for human divers. Guided by a team of deep-sea archeologists, OceanOne has already been used to investigate the shipwreck of La Lune, the flagship vessel of King Louis XIV that sank in 1664 off the southern coast of France. "OceanOne will be your avatar," said Oussama Khatib, a professor of computer science at Stanford. "The intent here is to have a human diving virtually, to put the human out of harm's way.
