At Criteo, machine learning lies at the core of our business. We use machine learning for choosing when we want to display ads as well as for personalized product recommendations and for optimizing the look & feel of our banners (as we automatically generate our own banners for each partner using our catalog of products). Our motto at Criteo is "Performance is everything" and to deliver the best performance we can, we've built a large scale distributed machine learning framework, called Irma, that we use in production and for running experiments when we search for improvements on our models. In the past, performance advertising was all about predicting clicks. That was a while ago.

'Minecraft' Is Now the Second Best-Selling Game of All Time
Okay, so Minecraft was already kinda-sorta the second-bestselling game of all time if you don't count Wii Sports, which was a pack-in, and I'm loathe to count stuff you can't buy standalone. But yes, on the basis of conventional video game sales leaderboards, with over 100 million copies (106,859,714 to be precise) across PC, mobile and console in the pocket, Minecraft is now officially second only to that all-time, all-platforms, indefatigable puzzling juggernaut, Tetris. Tetris has something like half a billion on the books if the entrepreneurial math here is right. So there's probably no way Minecraft is going to beat that, probably ever. But consider the next-bestselling game (excluding Wii Sports) is Grand Theft Auto V, with an impressive but presumably now creeping 65 million copies.
Spotify banks on original content and machine learning in its path to profit
Spotify is a household name, with more paying users than any other music-streaming service in the world. But it doesn't make a penny. Those 30 million paid subscribers help it rake in almost half the revenues in the global industry. But most of the money goes to record labels and artists, while the privately owned Swedish company faces growing competition from Apple with its deep pockets and massive iPhone user base. To reduce its dependence on labels and stand apart from rivals, Spotify is broadening beyond its music library.

US aviation body trials British anti-drone system for airports
An anti-drone system developed by a trio of UK companies is to receive its first public test by America's Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), in an effort to protect airports from the risks of hobbyist's unmanned aerial vehicles. The system, called the Anti-UAV Defence System (Auds), looks like a mounted turret but instead of shooting drones out of the sky with bullets, it fires nothing more menacing than radio waves. Auds has three barrels of descending sizes, which act as a set of directional radio antennas. The portion of the radio spectrum used by drones is narrow, and so a short, loud (in electromagnetic terms) blast of energy is enough to completely prevent the drone from being able to communicate with its controller. Conventional multidirectional jamming systems work on drones, but have the downside of preventing the use of anything else in the area that relies on the same portion of the radio spectrum, such as mobile phones.
Why scientists want robots to learn to feel pain
Robots are one step closer to being able to experience an essential human feeling: pain. Researchers in Germany are creating a "nervous system" that would mimic a pain response in robots, allowing them to quickly react and avoid harmful situations. "Pain is a system that protects us," researcher Johannes Kuehn told a conference of engineers last week. "When we evade from the source of pain, it helps us not get hurt." The researchers programmed their robot to experience a "hierarchy" of pain through a variety of stimuli, such as blunt force or heat. Depending on the threat, such as a harsh movement or intense heat, the robot is programmed to retract to the danger.
