Invisible Design : Airbnb Design
The machine was, and still is, my constant partner. I need her in order to translate the creative thoughts in my head into tangible ideas I can share with the world. Transitioning to design from a modern dance career in my twenties, I never thought a machine would be my accomplice for innovation. Machines have rapidly developed intelligence in this generation and their capabilities are changing the products we design. The process in which they are designed will also need to evolve.
Twitter acquires AI startup Magic Pony for a reported 150m
Twitter has bought London-based AI startup Magic Pony Technology for a reported 150m ( 102m) as the company moves to strengthen its position in image-sharing, video and live video. Founded in 2014, Magic Pony uses machine learning to build improved systems for visual processing. The company said it was excited to be joining forces with Twitter "to improve the visual experiences that are delivered across their apps". Twitter's chief executive, Jack Dorsey, said Magic Pony's technology would be used to enhance live and video offerings and "opens up a whole lot of exciting creative possibilities for Twitter". Dorsey said the team included "11 PhDs with expertise across computer vision, machine learning, high-performance computing and computational neuroscience".
Frankenstein's paperclips
AS DOOMSDAY SCENARIOS go, it does not sound terribly frightening. The "paperclip maximiser" is a thought experiment proposed by Nick Bostrom, a philosopher at Oxford University. Imagine an artificial intelligence, he says, which decides to amass as many paperclips as possible. It devotes all its energy to acquiring paperclips, and to improving itself so that it can get paperclips in new ways, while resisting any attempt to divert it from this goal. Eventually it "starts transforming first all of Earth and then increasing portions of space into paperclip manufacturing facilities". This apparently silly scenario is intended to make the serious point that AIs need not have human-like motives or psyches.

Rolls-Royce Rolls Out Autonomous Ship Technology That Reduces The Need For Human-Machine Interaction
Rolls-Royce this week unveiled a white paper on autonomous ships at an Amsterdam symposium, predicting the commercialization of the technology by the end of the decade. It's not if; it's when," Oskar Levander, Rolls-Royce's vice president for marine innovation, told the Autonomous Ship Technology Symposium 2016 Tuesday as the company issued its white paper, "Advanced Autonomous Waterborne Applications Initiative." "The technologies needed to make remote and autonomous ships a reality exist. The AAWA project is testing sensor arrays in a range of operating and climatic conditions in Finland and has created a simulated autonomous ship control system which allows the behavior of the complete communication system to be explored. We will see a remote-controlled ship in commercial use by the end of the decade," Levander said. The technology, which Rolls-Royce said has the support of shipowners and operators, was tested on Finferries' 213-foot double-ended ferry, the Stella, which operates between Korpo and Houtskรคr. Cannes Lions 2016: IBM Watson and AI Activations Abound
Artificial intelligence is a major player at Cannes Lions this week. And while AI is expected to transform tech within five years, Alphabet Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt assured attendees that there's little chance it will become "evil" as Hollywood films have depicted. In fact, he said, there are imminent benefits of AI. "Computer vision is now better than human vision. It means self-driving cars probably see a lot better than you, especially if you are drunk." Meanwhile, British musician and producer Brian Eno spoke about creativity and AI, defending human intelligence. "AI is not as advanced as we expected it would be," he said.
An AI arms race could be the death of us, scientists warn
Robots probably won't kill people, but people could kill people with robots. That's the concern of an open letter signed by scientists and other interested parties -- including Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak and Stephen Hawking. If any major military power pushes ahead with AI weapon development, a global arms race is virtually inevitable, and the endpoint of this technological trajectory is obvious: autonomous weapons will become the Kalashnikovs of tomorrow. 'Smart' tropical fish can recognize human faces
PARIS โ A tropical fish can tell one human face from another despite lacking a brain section that homo sapiens and other "smart" animals use for this task, scientists said. The astonishing ability was demonstrated in experiments with eight archerfish, a tropical species best known for spitting pressurized water jets to shoot prey out of the air. Instead of aiming at bugs, the sharpshooting fish were taught to spit at pictures of human faces displayed on a computer monitor suspended over their aquarium. "We were pleasantly surprised at the speed at which the fish learned as well as their high degree of accuracy," said study co-author Cait Newport of the Oxford University's department of zoology. The fish, which require excellent vision for hunting, were first introduced to two faces, and conditioned to spit at one of them in exchange for a food reward.
Rethinking Computational Thinking
How important are skills in computational thinking for computing app constructors and for computing users in general? If we can teach our children early on to smile, talk, write, read, and count through frequent and repetitive use of patterns in well-chosen examples, is it also possible for us, assuming we have the skills, to teach our children to construct computing applications? Do we need to first teach them anything about computational thinking before we look to teach how to construct computing apps? If not, how important will computational skills be for us all, as Jeannette Wing suggests in her blog@cacm "Computational Thinking, 10 Years Later" (Mar. Many competent and successful computing app constructors and users never hear a word about computational thinking but still manage to acquire sufficient construction and user skills through frequent and repetitive use of patterns in well-chosen examples.
