For the last several years Riga, Latvia-based new media sculptor Krists Pudzens has been fusing the two disciplines with his "electromechanical art." In his first major exhibition, SHIFT, Pudzens showcases a number of kinetic and interactive works created between 2007 and 2014. The show features seven objects that explore various types of perception like audio, visual and tactile sensations, but also function as "closed, introverted" systems with distinct appearances and movement.

Sea Slug Provides The Muscle For Tiny Robot
Sea slugs typically slither--a perfectly respectable way to get around--but recently a team of scientists saw additional locomotive potential in the odd-looking invertebrate. Specifically, they took a tiny muscle from the sea slug's mouth and used it to make a robot crawl. "We're building a living machine--a biohybrid robot that's not completely organic--yet," Victoria Webster, the PhD student who is leading the research, said in a statement. A sea slug might seem an unlikely source for robot parts. But according to the researchers, sea slugs are exceptionally tough creatures, and that toughness extends down to the cellular level.
NVIDIA's Deep Learning Car Computer Selected by Volvo on Journey Toward a Crash-Free Future
CES--Volvo Cars will use the NVIDIA DRIVE PX 2 deep learning- based computing engine to power a fleet of 100 Volvo XC90 SUVs starting to hit the road next year in the Swedish carmaker's Drive Me autonomous-car pilot program, NVIDIA announced today. Autonomous technology is an important contributor to Volvo's Vision 2020 -- its guiding principles for creating safer vehicles. This work has resulted in world-leading advancements in autonomous and semi-autonomous driving, and a new safety benchmark for the automotive industry. "Our vision is that no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo by the year 2020," said Marcus Rothoff, director of the Autonomous Driving Program at Volvo Cars. "NVIDIA's high-performance and responsive automotive platform is an important step towards our vision and perfect for our autonomous drive program and the Drive Me project."
Zimmer Biomet Joins Surgical Robotics Race - Artificial Intelligence Online
The ortho giant's purchase of French surgical robotics firm Medtech could give competitor Mazor Robotics a run for its money, according to one analyst. Zimmer Biomet has officially entered the surgical robotics market with its acquisition of a majority of shares in the French firm Medtech, maker of a robotics platform for neurological and spine procedures. The Warsaw, IN-based company, a leader in the musculoskeletal space, announced July 18 that it had purchased almost 59% of shares in Medtech and also intends to mount an all-cash simplified tender offer to acquire the remaining shares. Zimmer Biomet will continue to operate Medtech out of its current headquarters in Montepellier, France, which will also serve as a "center of excellence" for Zimmer Biomet's surgical robotics development efforts, according to a joint press release from the companies. With the Medtech acquisition, Zimmer Biomet gains the Rosa platform, which is currently used in 20 hospitals in Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East, according to the company's website.
