Two London trusts have become the first in UK to establish data sharing between their Cerner Health Information Exchanges, covering a population of 1.3 million people. Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Barts Health NHS Trust went live on with the connection 12 July, with clinicians in both acute hospitals able to view a summarised care record from the other site. The visible information for each trust includes discharge summaries, diagnosis, medications, investigations and results. Niall Canavan, Homerton Hospital's director of information technology, said the next step was "to open this data to any contributing partner organisation in east London". Charles Gutteridge, Barts' chief clinical information officer, said the move had been "relatively simple to do, as Homerton also used the Cerner Millennium system, but a really big step forward".

Global law firm Reed Smith has teamed up with UK-based legal AI company, RAVN Systems, in further proof of the growing demand for AI technology in the legal sector. So far the US-based firm has completed a successful pilot of RAVN's cognitive engine, which is primarily used for analysing documents and extracting key information, often at far higher speeds and levels of accuracy than teams of junior lawyers and paralegals could normally achieve. The 1,700-lawyer firm will now start using the RAVN cognitive engine in actual client work. This latest partnering between a major law firm and an AI company is further proof of the growing demand and interest in the legal community for AI applications. Other law firms that RAVN publicly acknowledges it works with, or has recently worked with, include: BLP, Dentons, CMS and DLA Piper.

Though I haven't lived there for nearly three decades, I still consider myself a citizen of Los Angeles. That means, among other things, I drive. For me, a car is like a suit or a good exoskeleton. Despite that heritage, I've been running an experiment on myself and my hometown. My last three trips there, I didn't rent a car; it's been nothing but taxis, Uber, and one time I borrowed my dad's. Getting into machine learning (ml) can seem like an unachievable task from the outside. However, after dedicating one week to learning the basics of the subject, I found it to be much more accessible than I anticipated. This article is intended to give others who're interested in getting into ml a roadmap of how to get started, drawing from the experiences I made in my intro week. Before my machine learning week, I had been reading about the subject for a while, and had gone through half of Andrew Ng's course on Coursera and a few other theoretical courses. So I had a tiny bit of conceptual understanding of ml, though I was completely unable to transfer any of my knowledge into code.

Your next Adidas runners might be made in America – by a robot. The shoemaker revealed more details today about its coming'Speedfactory,' which it previously announced would be coming to the U.S. in 2017. The factory will call Atlanta home, and feature 74,000 square feet of robot shoemaking capability, with full operational status target for the end of next year. The factory has an output capacity of 50,000 Paris of shoes per year, which is only a small slice of its overall annual shoe shipments. But the Atlanta facility will be Adidas' second Speedfactory, joining the original in its home territory of Germany.

Mark Zuckerberg's house is smarter than your house -- and he's almost ready to prove it. The Facebook CEO, who is building an artificial intelligence system to operate and control his home, says he's almost ready to show off what he's been working on. "I'm making progress," Zuckerberg said at a public Q&A in Italy on Monday. "I hope to have a demo ... next month." Zuckerberg is building the tech as part of his New Year's resolution. "You can think of it kind of like Jarvis in'Iron Man,'" he wrote back in January.

The world is not moving towards a dystopian future just as yet, but one can't deny the effect innovations in the robotics field will have on human life, especially when it comes to a waning workforce as a result of increased use of automation technologies. Experts have already started sounding the warning bells. As per a report published by advisory analyst firm HfS Research in July, the true impact of the emergence of intelligent automation will be felt on the global industry of 15 million IT services and BPO workers, which will see about 1.4 million job losses--a net decrease of 9%--by 2021. In India, the services industry workforce is expected to shrink by 4.8 lakh by 2021, a decline of 14%--HfS Research estimates that the IT services and BPO industry employs about 3.5 million people in the country. Last year, technology research firm Gartner predicted that one in three jobs will be converted to software, robots and smart machines by 2025.

Car manufacturer Ford has selected Astute Solutions to implement the Astute Knowledge service across 21 European countries, supporting 18 different languages. Included in the service are Astute's artificial narrow intelligence (ANI) and natural language processing capabilities. Ford customers will be able to engage in 2-way conversation with a "virtual agent" on Ford's website, social media, or mobile app. This virtual agent will analyze what the customer is saying and apply deep learning to provide the best answer from multiple data sources, even sources originally written in a different language.
