Two students have built an AI that could be the basis of future killer robots. In a controversial move, the pair trained an AI bot to kill human players within the classic video game Doom. Critics have expressed concern over the AI technology and the risk it could pose to humans in future. Devendra Chaplot and Guillaume Lample, from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh trained an AI bot - nicknamed Arnold - using'deep reinforcement learning' techniques. While Google's AI software had previously been shown to tackle vintage 2D Atari games such as Space Invaders, the students wanted to expand the technology to tackle three-dimensional first-person shooter games like Doom.

IBM said today that it will invest 200 million in a new global headquarters for its Watson Internet of Things business in Munich Germany. The move is part of the strategy of combining Watson -- the supercomputer that beat the world's best human Jeopardy player -- with the Internet of Things (IoT), or using sensors to make everyday objects smart and connected. It's also part of a global plan to invest 3 billion to bring Watson's cognitive computing to IoT. The investment in Munich is one of the company's largest ever in Europe and is in response to growing demand from customers who want to transform their operations with A.I. and IoT. IBM said it has 6,000 global clients using its Watson IoT solutions and services, up from 4,000 eight months ago.

The integrated circuits that powered the past 50 years of technological revolution are reaching their physical limits. This predicament has computer scientists scrambling for new ideas: new devices built using novel physics, new ways of organizing units within computers and even algorithms that use new or existing systems more efficiently. To help coordinate new ideas, Sandia National Laboratories has assisted organizing the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) International Conference on Rebooting Computing held Oct. 17-19. "We're taking a stab at the scope of what neural algorithms can do. We're not trying to be exhaustive, but rather we're trying to highlight the kind of application over which algorithms may be impactful," said Brad Aimone, a computational neuroscientist and co-author of one paper.

Andre van Rüschen has no memory of the day he lost all feeling in his legs. After a car accident in Germany, he had a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the waist down. When he woke up from a coma in a hospital in Hamburg, the doctors told him he would never walk again. But now, thirteen years later, van Rüschen is back on his feet, and he is training to compete as a pilot in the Powered Exoskeleton race at the Cybathlon in Zurich this month. In a high-rise office building on Leipziger Platz in Berlin, he slides out of his wheelchair onto a black leather pouf where a ReWalk exoskeleton sits folded.

IBM is betting big on internet of things and setting aside 200 million for its Watson IoT division's headquarters in Munich. The company says this investment, one of the biggest it's ever made in Europe, is a response to the growing demand for AI technologies and the capability to connect everything to the internet. Part of the money will go to setting up hands-on labs where its clients can work with a thousand researchers, engineers, developers and business experts in the city. In fact, the tech corp has already secured new partnerships with German automotive parts supplier Schaeffler, Netherlands-based dronemaker Aerialtronics and three facilities at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals in Philadelphia. Schaeffler will use the Watson-powered IoT platform to give the various products it manufactures for the wind turbine, train, auto and other industries a way to monitor their own conditions.
