Google is using its Artificial Intelligence to conquer the London Underground

DeepMind has already been involved in several major new intelligence projects as it looks to get Ai systems into the mainstream. Earlier this year, it was revealed that the company will be working closely with the NHS, using its powerful systems to sift through mountains of data to establish patterns which could lead to improvements in patient care, including better ways to manage bed space and medication tracking. The partnership could also be used to try and spot diseases before they happen, as detecting infection trends could help the NHS prepare for harmful outbreaks or new strains of disease. Also among the possibilities are reading medical images, managing junior doctor schedules, and even financial solutions, such as ensuring expensive tests aren't carried out more than once.

Tay's introduction by Microsoft was not just an attempt to build an AI that learnt from human interactions, but also one that potentially enriched Microsoft's brand and was designed also to harvest users information such as gender, location/zip codes, favourite foods, and so on (as was the Microsoft Age guessing software of last year). It harvested user interactions alright, but after a group of trolls launched a sustained, coordinated effort to influence Tay, the AI did exactly what Microsoft designed it to do -- it adapted to the language of it's so-called peers. Tay appears to have accomplished an analogous feat, except that instead of processing reams of Go data she mainlined interactions on Twitter, Kik, and GroupMe. She had more negative social experiences between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning than a thousand of us do throughout puberty. It was peer pressure on uppers, "yes and" gone mad. No wonder she turned out the way she did. I've Seen the Greatest A.I. Teaching Artificial Intelligences is not only about deep learning capability, but significantly about the data these AIs will consume, and not all data is good data.


Does Brain Hacking Constitute Brain Doping?

The brain is an electric organ, and its 86 billion neurons communicate via pulses of electricity. When a voltage change causes one neuron to "fire," it releases chemicals that trigger voltage changes in connected neurons. The brain's every operation, from automatic functions like maintaining a heartbeat to cognitive processes such as making sense of these words you are reading, can be understood as a flickering pattern of electrical activity, with neurons firing along specific pathways. A researcher at Arizona State University (my alma mater) has discovered how to control robots using the human brain. A controller wears a skullcap outfitted with 128 electrodes wired to a computer.


Watson's the name, data's the game

It's a lightning-fast learner, speaks eight languages and is considered an expert in multiple fields. It's got an exemplary work ethic, is a speed reader and finds insights no one else can. On a personal note, it's a mean chef and even offers good dating advice. Named after IBM's first CEO, Watson was created back in 2007 as part of an effort by IBM Research to develop a question-answering system that could compete on the American quiz show "Jeopardy." Since trouncing its human opponents on the show in 2011, it has expanded considerably.

A drone boat which can patrol the English Channel and track migrants on 12-hour missions is being trialled for Special Forces during a massive robot war games exercise. Yesterday it took part in the Royal Navy's robotic Unmanned Warrior exercise, the biggest ever war game using more than 50 types of drones off the UK coast. The inflatable P950 boat - of which a manned version is already in service and is used by elite troops - can be driven both manually by a remote control and also in an autonomous mode. Using a remote control with a joystick, troops on a ships miles away or on land can tell it where to go and have a live 360 degree angle of what the boat sees. Or they can put it in autonomous mode and just give the boat a destination, and the boat will navigate itself avoiding any obstacles it comes into contact with. In the future it could be equipped with weaponry to help with mine-hunting.


Mark Zuckerberg asks Facebook what voice his 'Iron Man' home AI assistant should have

Earlier this year, Mark Zuckerberg revealed he is dedicating his year to making a home AI butler. Now, he is ready to give a voice to the AI, which he modelled on the J.A.R.V.I.S. stands for (Just A Rather Very Intelligent System) system used by Tony Stark in the Iron Man films. Zuckerberg to his personal Facebook page to ask to help on what it should sound like - and admitted'this just got real' when Robert Downey Jr offered to voice it. Autonomous delivery bots will soon stroll the streets of Washington D.C.

Some Washington, D.C., residents may soon be sharing the streets with Starship Technologies' delivery robots. Back in June, Washington became the first U.S. city to approve a pilot program of the ground-based delivery robots. Among some restrictions, the D.C. Council bill specifies that PPDs, or personal delivery devices, must not operate above 10 miles per hour, must weigh less than 50 pounds without cargo, and must obey all traffic and pedestrian signs and signals. Starship Technologies' bot is equipped to follow all of these guidelines. It weighs around 40 pounds and is capable of carrying about three filled shopping bags while rolling along at a safe speed of four miles per hour.


Google's AI reasons its way around the London Underground

Artificial-intelligence (AI) systems known as neural networks can recognize images, translate languages and even master the ancient game of Go. But their limited ability to represent complex relationships between data or variables has prevented them from conquering tasks that require logic and reasoning. In a paper published in Nature on 12 October1, the Google-owned company DeepMind in London reveals that it has taken a step towards overcoming this hurdle by creating a neural network with an external memory. The combination allows the neural network not only to learn, but to use memory to store and recall facts to make inferences like a conventional algorithm. This in turn enables it to tackle problems such as navigating the London Underground without any prior knowledge and solving logic puzzles.
