Even Stephen Hawking has no clue what the future of AI holds

"In short, the rise of powerful AI will be either the best or the worst thing ever to happen to humanity," Hawking said this week at the opening of the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence in Cambridge, England. "We do not yet know which." The LCFI, which opened Monday, is part of the University of Cambridge's Centre for the Study of Existential Risk. Their goal is to answer some of the biggest questions facing the rapidly advancing field -- including what it all means, and how to keep AI from killing us. In the past, Hawking has warned that AI could end mankind.

Computers that learn for themselves are with us now. As they become more common in'high-stakes' applications like robotic surgery, terrorism detection and driverless cars, researchers ask what can be done to make sure we can trust them. There would always be a first death in a driverless car and it happened in May 2016. Joshua Brown had engaged the autopilot system in his Tesla when a tractor-trailor drove across the road in front of him. It seems that neither he nor the sensors in the autopilot noticed the white-sided truck against a brightly lit sky, with tragic results.

Tesla is making several big announcements this month, and Elon Musk just delivered the first: From now on, all new Tesla cars will be self-driving. The electric automaker also teamed up with Panasonic to build solar panels for its Powerwall home battery, which it's set to update next week. Hyperloop One is forging ahead on its futuristic transportation system by raising 50 million and hiring Uber's former CFO as an advisor. It looks like Apple has scrapped plans to build a self-driving car, and BMW showcased plans for a next-gen smart motorcycle that will never crash or tip over. In energy news, scientists accidentally discovered a cheap, simple way to transform CO2 into ethanol fuel.

Europe deserves a landscape of its own to highlight its talent and expertise. Using Keras and Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient to play TORCS

This is the second blog posts on the reinforcement learning. In this project we will demonstrate how to use the Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient algorithm (DDPG) with Keras together to play TORCS (The Open Racing Car Simulator), a very interesting AI racing game and research platform. As a typical child growing up in Hong Kong, I do like watching cartoon movies. One of my favorite movies is called GPX Cyber Formula. It is an anime series about Formula racing in the future, a time when the race cars are equipped with super-intelligent AI computer system called "Cyber Systems".

Meet the Artists Who Have Embraced Artificial Intelligence

Sam Kronick has a bunch of rocks arrayed in front of him on a raised desk in his Oakland studio. He's an artist and his plan is to sketch the rocks, but not with pen and paper. He and his artistic partner Tara Shi are going to do a 3D scan of them so that an artificial intelligence program can map their contours, learn to recognize rocks and then start generating its own craggy depictions. The project is deceptively simple: trying to get artificial intelligence to make nature art. Kronick and Shi are using a neural net, a computer program loosely modeled on biological neural systems like the human brain.


Stephen Hawking Partners With Colleges To Research Artificial Intelligence Droids

Professor Stephen Hawking recently unveiled an Artificial Intelligence Research Center. The Center is set up at Cambridge University just this week. The Center will focus mainly on Artificial Intelligence but will look into "Terminator" style army droids - like in the movie. The Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence is looking into the development of Artificial Intelligence for the benefit of society. And that also include military applications, according to Inverse.


Stochastic inference with spiking neurons in the high-conductance state

The highly variable dynamics of neocortical circuits observed in vivo have been hypothesized to represent a signature of ongoing stochastic inference but stand in apparent contrast to the deterministic response of neurons measured in vitro. Based on a propagation of the membrane autocorrelation across spike bursts, we provide an analytical derivation of the neural activation function that holds for a large parameter space, including the high-conductance state. On this basis, we show how an ensemble of leaky integrate-and-fire neurons with conductance-based synapses embedded in a spiking environment can attain the correct firing statistics for sampling from a well-defined target distribution. For recurrent networks, we examine convergence toward stationarity in computer simulations and demonstrate sample-based Bayesian inference in a mixed graphical model. This points to a new computational role of high-conductance states and establishes a rigorous link between deterministic neuron models and functional stochastic dynamics on the network level.
