Artificial intelligence, data, and the legal debate: What marketers need to know now
I recently attended the ReWork Deep Learning conference in London, a fantastic event bringing world leading academics, large multinationals and start-ups together to discuss the latest advances in this branch of artificial intelligence and how it can improve our lives. Although very few applications include AI at present, it is predicted to increase exponentially over the next few years as the technology currently in development gets released for general use. While there were many fascinating talks about advances in healthcare and construction, there were two distinct themes that are relevant to marketers that ran through almost all the talks I attended, and there is no doubt that both issues will need addressing soon. The first of the issues was the moral and legal agency of AI applications. If your doctor misdiagnoses you, you have somewhere to go to complain and have the potential for compensation.

Has a tumor shrunk during the course of treatment over several months, or have new tumors developed? To answer questions like these, physicians often perform CT and MRI scans. Tumors are usually evaluated only visually, and new tumors are often over- looked. "Our program package increases confidence during tumor measurement and follow-up," explains Mark Schenk from the Fraunhofer Institute for Medical Image Computing MEVIS in Bremen, Germany. "The software can, for example, determine how the volume of a tumor changes over time and supports the detection of new tumors."

Everywhere you look, now there is some form of artificial intelligence appearing. Whether it's to make a process more efficient or whether it's to keep humans safe and away from danger, robots are creeping in at every chance they get, and this is expected to carry on for quite some years to come. Now, a new center has been launched in Cambridge, England that will look to continue the study of AI more closely along with the implications that come with these marvelous machines. There will be seven projects of focus at the CFI over the next three years and will cover things like autonomous weapons, and responsible innovation. Professor Stephen Hawking was at the launch of the VFI, and he commented, "Success in creating AI could be the biggest event in the history of civilizationโฆ.it could also be the last unless we learn how to avoid the risks."
Robotics tutor for primary school children
The use of robotic tutors in primary school classrooms is one step closer according to research recently published in the open access journal Frontiers in Computational Neuroscience. Dr Imbernรฒn Cuadrado and his co-workers at the Department of Artificial Intelligence in Madrid have developed an integrated computational architecture (ARTIE) for use with software applications in schools. "The main goal of our work was to design a system that can detect the emotional state of primary school children interacting with educational software and make pedagogic interventions with a robot tutor that can ultimately improve the learning experience," says Luis Imbernรฒn Cuadrado. Online educational resources are becoming increasingly common in the classroom, although they have not taken into sufficient account that the learning ability of primary school children is particularly sensitive to their emotional state. This is perhaps where robot tutors can step in to assist teachers.
Japan's war against medical marijuana
Former actress Saya Takagi was arrested in Okinawa on Oct. 25 for possession of marijuana, three months after she unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the Upper House election on a platform to legalize pot for medical purposes. She insists the contraband was not hers. Though Takagi, whose real name is Ikue Masudo, is retired from showbiz, reruns of dramas she appeared in are still shown on TV. When a celebrity is involved in a scandal, broadcasters scour their lineups for any ties to the disgraced person. TV Asahi quickly scrubbed from its afternoon schedule old episodes of the popular detective series "Aibo" that featured Takagi.

So if you want to learn more about machine learning, how do you start? For me, my first introduction is when I took an Artificial Intelligence class when I was studying abroad in Copenhagen. My lecturer is a full-time Applied Math and CS professor at the Technical University of Denmark, in which his research areas are logic and artificial, focusing primarily on the use of logic to model human-like planning, reasoning and problem solving. The class was a mix of discussion of theory/core concepts and hands-on problem solving. The textbook that we used is one of the AI classics: Peter Norvig's Artificial Intelligence -- A Modern Approach, in which we covered major topics including intelligent agents, problem-solving by searching, adversarial search, probability theory, multi-agent systems, social AI, philosophy/ethics/future of AI.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group on Data Analytics launches today in Parliament. The group aims to explore the opportunities and challenges presented by'big data', a term which refers to the growth of large, complex data that can be analysed to provide valuable new insights. It's a complicated and controversial area, one that is only going to become more significant as time goes on for those making and influencing policy. Coming from an IT background, I've witnessed a drastic shift in technology over the decades and the speed of that shift is increasing. It can perhaps be best encapsulated by a simple fact: around 90 per cent of global data was created in just the last two years - and that amount is predicted to grow year on year for the next decade.
Artificial Intelligence and the Anatomy of The (Healthy) Future
If I had to pick one area I find most exciting, most potentially disruptive and thus the best opportunity for return on investment, it would be A.I. Or is it the other way around? The anatomy of infrastructure is not unlike that of the human body, and we all know it's possible to live long, healthy lives. But we also know that systems out of balance in the body lead to sickness and disease (or, in the case of Industrial Revolution, economic disease and monetary sickness). It hasn't happened yet, as history has shown that human behavior, fear, and greed are more sure in life than death and taxes. Remember, we're trying to construct an infrastructure with systems working in harmony: the Anatomy of the (Healthy) Future Clearly, the best representation of the nervous system in our cyber-anatomy infrastructure is Artificial Intelligence, the future of which is Deep Learning (Augmented Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Neural Networks have actually been around some time).

One of the latest trends in the world of commercial vehicle design and engineering is'machine learning', a term that's used across the wider automotive world and is rapidly transforming the way in which certain vehicle systems are engineered and built. Vehicle manufacturers are keen to get hold of people with machine learning experience and bring them on board for the betterment of future products. It's also being touted as fundamental to the development of driverless vehicles. But what is machine learning?
