Computer scientists have been at the self-driving vehicle problem for longer than you might think. Early research into the automated logic required for autonomous cars was published in the mid-70s, while the first fully robotic van came around in the early-80s courtesy of Ernst Dickmanns and his team at Bundeswehr University Munich. Efforts at Carnegie Mellon, meanwhile, were pushing the technology on the other side of that Atlantic. Then came NavLab, in 1986. Yeah, it's pretty quaint, but machine vision algorithms, in particular, were still young.

Google has finally launched an own-brand smartphone, the Pixel, to challenge Apple head on and provide a premium Android experience with the hardware tailored to the software by the people who actually make it.. The new smartphone succeeds Google's Nexus line of devices and the company claims that the Pixel is now 100% Google, unlike the Nexus devices where Google provided the software and had some input into the devices but not total control. The Pixel phone joins the Pixel C Android tablet and Chromebook Pixel as Google's first in-house devices. But for Google, the Pixel isn't just a smartphone, it's a referendum on whether Google as a brand sells. With an all-metal body, all-glass display, rock-solid build, fingerprint scanner and headphones socket, the Pixel ticks most of the boxes expected of top-end smartphone, except for a lack of waterproofing. How attractive it is as a design divides opinion.


AI, robotics and the future of work

Can robots truly be creative and use their imagination?

I define creativity as the association between two ideas that one would not ordinarily consider a reasonable one to make but that works. I think that this is a rather simple thing to do for computers. I've been working on writing novels computationally for well over 10 years now and I'm still trying it, although I believe that within the next two to three years I will have broken its back and will produce 100,000-word novels in half an hour or so, novels that I think most people would consider to be creative. I can do uncreative short stories at this point, ones where the associations are routine and expected; they have occurred in many thousands of previous books. But I believe that in the near future my programs will be able to do creative ones. We are used to machines being used as tools that do not have a high level of cognitive ability, so it's difficult for people to think of them as being able to exhibit truly creative behaviour.

In the previous example we used clustering to see if an apparent pattern exists within Brexit tweets. We found out that we have three distinct patterns, the leave, the referendum, and Brexit. This in itself helps us think that we may even create a classifier that can identify if the tweet writer is pro or agains an issue automatically, with no human intervention. Let's get back to the issues related to clustering. To use the clustering algorithm we had to map 2 tweets at the time to a binary vector.


The self-driving delivery van that can be 'built in four hours' - and it will hit UK streets next year

A fleet of self-driving delivery vans could be set to hit the UK's roads as early as next year. The electric vehicles could dramatically cut harmful emissions, and would be ready for the switch to driverless technology. What's more, the makers claim the basic design means they can be built by one person in just four hours. Unveiled at Wired magazine's 2016 conference in London this month, the'autonomous ready' electric vehicles could be the delivery trucks of the future. Made by Oxfordshire-based company Charge, the vehicles will use ultra-lightweight composite materials, reducing their weight.

Banking has come a long way from its roots in 2000 BC when merchants were using grain as currency for loans (Davies 1994). During the Italian Renaissance, the banking process became more sophisticated as services such as deposits and withdrawals were added (Varadarajan 2014). With the continued modernization of commerce, the industry progressed at an exponential rate. This progress eventually tapered off when the 2008 Financial Crisis hit, effectively tarnishing consumer trust in financial institutions.
