Oxford and Cambridge are losing AI researchers to DeepMind

Some of the smartest minds in the UK are being lured away from their research positions at Oxford and Cambridge by DeepMind -- a London-based AI lab that was acquired by Google for £400 million in 2014. More than a dozen AI researchers have left the academic powerhouses over the last couple of years for what are likely to be better-paid roles at DeepMind, according to LinkedIn. Steven Cave, the director of Cambridge University's new Centre for the Future of Intelligence, believes that the exodus of talent from academia to corporates is something of a problem. "The best people are being offered huge sums of money to go and work at these tech companies," Cave told Business Insider in Cambridge last week. "You find that you're talking to someone and they're expressing a great deal of interest in a research project and then they're snapped up. We understand that ambitious young people want to work at these big name companies and earn lots of money and that's fine. But at the same time we hope that there will be enough bright young things who are motivated by the intellectual challenge of the issues we're working on and by the sense of wanting to do something good that makes a difference for the world."


Searching for brain regions responsible for kids dyslexia

We used ML methods to find brain regions responsible for this! Check out the paper: "Multi-Parameter Machine Learning Approach to the Neuroanatomical Basis of Developmental Dyslexia" in Human Brain Mapping journal with cooperation with fantastic neurobiologists. We have a dataset with Magnetic Resonance Images from 236 kids from Poland, France and Germany. Among them 130 were with dyslexia.


AI successfully predicts the results of the US presidential election

The MogIA artificial intelligence (AI) platform has successfully predicted its fourth US election in a row, paving the way for the potential of this new technology in the future. This election in particular tested the system's ability to predict the results of a presidential race as its prediction was the opposite of what many pre-election polls indicated, leading some to believe that it would lose its streak of successful predictions. MogIa makes its predictions by utilising 20 million data points from a number of online services including Google, Twitter and YouTube. It then analyses the data it collects related to public engagement from social media posts before making a decision as to who will win. Sanjiv Rai, the founder of the Indian startup Genic.ai that developed MogIA, explained how the system operates: "While most algorithms suffer from programmers' /developers' biases, MogIA aims at learning from her environment, developing her own rules at the policy layer and developing expert systems without discarding any data."

Farming Simulator 17, released on 25 October, is the latest game in a series made by Giants Software in Schlieren, Switzerland. Players start out with little land and few machines and must plant, tend and harvest crops – or raise livestock – to earn money to buy more land and more machines.


The Brain vs. Deep Learning vs. Singularity

In this blog post I will delve into the brain and explain its basic information processing machinery and compare it to deep learning. I do this by moving step-by-step along with the brains electrochemical and biological information processing pipeline and relating it directly to the architecture of convolutional nets. Thereby we will see that a neuron and a convolutional net are very similar information processing machines. While performing this comparison, I will also discuss the computational complexity of these processes and thus derive an estimate for the brains overall computational power. I will use these estimates, along with knowledge from high performance computing, to show that it is unlikely that there will be a technological singularity in this century. This blog post is complex as it arcs over multiple topics in order to unify them into a coherent framework of thought. I have tried to make this article as readable as possible, but I might have not succeeded in all places.

Facebook Puts Deep Learning In The Palm Of Your Hand

Facebook has built a simple-looking video tool to show off a sophisticated use of artificial intelligence on cell phones. During an event at its office fb in Menlo Park, Calif., last Friday afternoon, Facebook CTO Mike Schroepfer showed off software that takes a live Facebook video feed from a cell phone and converts the image in real time into a selection of artistic styles, such as that of Van Gogh. It might sound like a simple filter, but usually an algorithm of this nature would need to send that type of information back to a server in a data center to process the pixels on more powerful machines. The Facebook crew crafted a less power-hungry and computing-intensive deep learning system they call "Caffe2Go," that uses the computing power in a cell phone. Facebook's Schroepfer showed the algorithm and other applications of artificial intelligence at the Web Summit conference in Lisbon, Portugal on Tuesday.

Artificial intelligence is key to the future of online retailers

According to the heads of a number of online retailers, artificial intelligence (AI) will play a key role in the future of the industry due to how it can be utilised to aid consumers in discovering new products and identifying what they want to buy. The chief executive of Shop Direct, Alex Baldock, believes that AI could be the company's "big bet" as it will provide a significant advantage to the retailer when dealing with its customers. Baldock explained how the new technology could help its business during a panel discussing technology's role in business, saying: "You have three seconds to seize the shopper's attention – it's called thumb stopping, the three-second audition. That's where personalisation comes in." Adrian Blair, the chief executive of Just Eat, was also present on the panel and noted that his company takes 80 per cent of its orders on mobile devices.
