Artificial Intelligence Festival Tomorrow

Tomorrow, the Icelandic Institute for Intelligent Machines and Reykjavík University's artificial intelligence lab, CADIA, will hold an AI Festival at Reykjavík University, intended to answer question such as, What are the implications for our economic systems as artificial intelligence and extensive automation invade our daily lives? The program starts at 2 pm and concludes with an open exhibition of artificial intelligence in industry and academia, where participants can enjoy a glimpse of some of the most advanced products, services, and research in the field of AI and high-tech in Iceland. The theme for this year's festival is artificial Intelligence and the economy, focusing on how ever more AI and automation will affect our economies. Besides, brand new approaches in economic research will be introduced. This year, the festival's keynote speaker is Dr. Doyne Farmer, who has advocated for reforms in economic research and theory.

Data streams in telecom: Koen Dejonghe

At the recent Spark & Machine Learning Meetup in Brussels, Koen Dejonghe of Eurocontrol delivered a lightning talk titled "Simulation and processing of data streams in telecommunications." Specifically, Koen discussed the development of a prototype for processing of data coming from cell towers, executed for a telco operator in the Middle East--with the added difficulty that the customer could not provide real data. In the end, Koen developed a data generator in Scala/Akka, a data processor with Spark Streaming, and a visualization front-end with Node.js.

These powerful insights make products such as fitness trackers and climate sensors more appealing. But as the technology evolves, experts are cautioning about the potential threats AI could pose in the future. "AI could be used to deal with particular issues around privacy and surveillance and things like this," Antoine Blondeau, chief executive of Sentient Technologies, told Al Jazeera at the Web Summit in Lisbon. Apple is increasing the size of its Siri team in Cambridge, job ads reveal

About a year ago, a certain California firm quietly snapped up VocalIQ, a UK-based startup that used machine learning to build conversational virtual assistants. Subsequent reports noted that Apple kept most of the startup's employees to work out of their unmarked Cambridge, UK office on integrating VocalIQ technology into Siri. Citing sources with knowledge of the matter, Business Insider reports that Apple is now looking to increase the size of the Siri team in Cambridge. "In a bid to make Siri that bit more useful to iPhone, iPad and Mac owners, Apple intends to hire at least half a dozen software engineers in Cambridge in the coming months," reads the post. Apple's Cambridge office is currently home to a team of roughly 30 people working on voice recognition technology that would let Siri and users speak to each other in a more natural dialogue.

A robot has just set a new record for the fastest-solved Rubik's Cube, according to its makers. The Sub1 Reloaded robot took just 0.637 seconds to analyse the toy and make 21 moves, so that each of the cube's sides showed a single colour. That beats a previous record of 0.887 seconds, which was achieved by an earlier version of the same machine using a different processor. Infineon provided its chip to highlight advancements in self-driving car tech. But one expert has questioned the point of the stunt.

It's such a common phenomenon that researchers gave the problem, which plagues between 70% and 90% of smartphone users, a name: phantom vibration syndrome. Some people find themselves so unhealthily attached to or distracted by their digital devices that they go on technology fasts to help them detach. Entrepreneur Rand Hindi says the problem isn't technology but the way we interact with it. Hindi, who was born in Lebanon and grew up in France, started coding at age 10, launched a web development agency at age 15, and earned his PhD in bioinformatics while working as a consultant on algorithmic trading.

Science fiction has, for many years, looked to a future in which robots are intelligent and cyborgs -- human/machine amalgams -- are commonplace: The Terminator, The Matrix, Blade Runner and I, Robot are all good examples of this. However, until the last decade any consideration of what this might actually mean in the future real world was not necessary because it was all science fiction and not scientific reality. Now, however, science has not only done a catching-up exercise but, in bringing about some of the ideas thrown up by science fiction, it has introduced practicalities that the original story lines did not appear to extend to (and in some cases have still not extended to). What we consider here are several different experiments in linking biology and technology together in a cybernetic fashion, essentially ultimately combining humans and machines in a relatively permanent merger. Key to this is that it is the overall final system that is important. Where a brain is involved, which surely it is, it must not be seen as a stand-alone entity but rather as part of an overall system, adapting to the system's needs: the overall combined cybernetic creature is the system of importance. Each experiment is described in its own section. Whilst there is a distinct overlap between the sections, they each throw up individual considerations.


European Parliament clears drone regulations for takeoff

Regulations to protect people from falling drones moved a little closer to takeoff at the European Parliament on Thursday. Ensuring drone safety took on a new urgency this week, with GoPro's recall of its Karma drone after unexplained mid-air power failures caused a number of them to drop out of the sky. Under the European Union's proposed regulations, drones will have to be registered so that their owners can be identified. While that won't in itself stop drones from falling, it could lead pilots to take their responsibilities more seriously, legislators hope. A 1-kilogram drone like the Karma falling from as little as 11 meters (around three stories) could kill even someone wearing a safety helmet, according to a calculator developed by the Dropped Object Prevention Scheme, which promotes safety in the oil and gas industry.
