Your dog can remember all those silly things you've done: Canines have 'episodic' memories, just like humans

Dogs have a remarkable ability to recall events from the past, in a similar way to humans. That's according to a new study which found evidence canines have a similar'episodic memory' to their human counterparts. Dogs can recall a person's actions even when they do not expect to have their memory tested, says the research. Previously, evidence that animals use episodic memory has been hard to come by, as it's impossible to ask an animal, in this case a dog, what they remember (stock image) Dogs trained using the trick can watch a person perform an action and carry out the action themselves. For example, if the their owner jumps in the air and then gives the command'do it', the dog would jump in the air. However, the researchers also needed to show that the dogs remembered what they just saw a person do, even when they weren't expecting to be asked or rewarded.

The UK wants to give startups £400 million to prevent foreign buyouts

The UK government just announced a slew of investment in startups and R&D in a move that's guaranteed to benefit the country's increasingly important technology sector. News of the funding was unveiled during Chancellor of the Exchequer Phillip Hammond's Autumn Statement. Your questions answered by founders, experts and thought leaders in business, design and tech. Over £400 million of government finance will make its way to startups as venture capital via the British Business Bank. The explicit purpose of this is to stop the flow of UK startups being purchased by foreign buyers.


Google DeepMind AI destroys human expert in lip reading competition - TechRepublic

A new artificial intelligence tool created by Google and Oxford University researchers could significantly improve the success of lip-reading and understanding for the hearing impaired. In a recently released paper on the work, the pair explained how the Google DeepMind-powered system was able to correctly interpret more words than a trained human expert. The tool is called Watch, Listen, Attend and Spell (WLAS), and the paper describes it as a "network that learns to transcribe videos of mouth motion to characters." Using videos from the BBC, the team trained the system with a dataset of more than 100,000 natural sentences. While similar attempts in the past have focused on a narrow set of words, the report said, Google and Oxford wanted to address lip reading through "unconstrained natural language sentences, and in the wild videos." The professional human lip reader whom the researchers compared the results against had roughly 10 years of experience in the field and had deciphered videos for the royal wedding and in court for trials as well, the report said.

The developments in Google's Cloud Computing segment, especially the Cloud Machine Learning service, have been so rapid that Google calls it one of its fastest growing product areas. Google has been ramping up their Cloud Platform quite aggressively in recent months. Just a few weeks ago, the Google Cloud Platform opened its newest zone in Tokyo, increasing the total number of regions they are present in to six - three in the US and one each in Belgium and Taiwan and Tokyo. Not long ago, the company announced its acquisition of Orbitera, a cloud commerce company. Facebook makes special tool for hiding stories from countries' citizens to get back into China, report claims

Facebook has developed a special tool to keep countries from seeing stories criticial of their government. The site has been secretly working on a feature that allows it to geographically censor specific posts from people in the country. It appears to have been done as a way of getting back into China, an important market for the company but one with an intense censorship regime. The apparent tool was revealed at a time when Facebook was facing increased scrutiny of how it picks what appears in news feed. It has received special criticism for the way that it allows fake news to flourish on the service, and many have claimed that it helped Donald Trump win the Presidential election.


U.K. Government Rewards Technology Sector in Autumn Statement

The U.K. government has distributed a number of gifts to the country's technology sector. In his first Autumn Statement Wednesday, Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond confirmed the U.K. government would invest an additional 2 billion pounds ($2.48 billion) into technology research and development by the end of the current Parliament in 2020. Some of this money will be allocated to a new Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund that will direct it to priority technologies, including robotics and artificial intelligence. Hammond also flagged further investment into the development of autonomous vehicles, and announced plans to invest 400 million pounds into venture capital via the British Business Bank, in order to stem the sale of promising U.K. startups to foreign buyers. "I am taking a first step to tackle the longstanding problem of our fastest growing technology firms being snapped up by bigger companies, rather than growing to scale," said Hammond.

Following recent reports from the Government Office for Science and the House of Commons Select Committee, Digital Catapult comments on how access to data can open opportunities to the UK's AI entrepreneurs. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is at the centre of two recent government reports. Yesterday, the Government Office for Science published an overview of AI that focuses on several significant areas: the effect of AI on productivity and economic value, advantages to government, effects on the labour market, ethical challenges and public trust. Earlier in October the House of Commons Select Committee published their report on Robotics and Artificial Intelligence that recommends that the government is to invest in education and training infrastructures, ensure digital inclusion and governance mechanisms, and provide leadership for future growth in robotics and AI. When considering where the government can provide a significant boost to UK AI and machine learning entrepreneurs, Digital Catapult believes there is a major opportunity in access to data.

Scientists use AI to 'rewrite' painful memories in people's brains

Treating phobias commonly involves patients being exposed to the objects, animals or situations they fear the most. A fear of cars, born from a car crash, may be tackled by exposure to vehicles, for example, or people with arachnophobia can beat it by handling spiders. The process involves remembering, and then mentally dealing with, the initial trauma but this can be a difficult and painful experience. AI may soon be able to help. "It would be nice if there was some way we could do this without people ever having to confront it – either unconsciously or subconsciously," Ben Seymour, a neuroscientist, told WIRED. Using a combination of real-time brain imaging through MRI scans, artificial intelligence, and rewards, the University of Cambridge doctor has created a way to remove specific fearful memories from the brain.
