There's the equivalent of some 43-football fields worth of space filled with gadgets at CES 2017. With that many tech toys to explore, they all start to blur together pretty quickly. Here's what I've seen so far that's made an impression. Amazon's Alexa virtual assistant is already trying to get into every room of your house, so it was only a matter of time before she made it into your car, too.

Efficient Multi-Scale 3D CNN with Fully Connected CRF for Accurate Brain Lesion Segmentation

We propose a dual pathway, 11-layers deep, three-dimensional Convolutional Neural Network for the challenging task of brain lesion segmentation. The devised architecture is the result of an in-depth analysis of the limitations of current networks proposed for similar applications. To overcome the computational burden of processing 3D medical scans, we have devised an efficient and effective dense training scheme which joins the processing of adjacent image patches into one pass through the network while automatically adapting to the inherent class imbalance present in the data. Further, we analyze the development of deeper, thus more discriminative 3D CNNs. In order to incorporate both local and larger contextual information, we employ a dual pathway architecture that processes the input images at multiple scales simultaneously. For post-processing of the network's soft segmentation, we use a 3D fully connected Conditional Random Field which effectively removes false positives. Our pipeline is extensively evaluated on three challenging tasks of lesion segmentation in multi-channel MRI patient data with traumatic brain injuries, brain tumors, and ischemic stroke. We improve on the state-of-the-art for all three applications, with top ranking performance on the public benchmarks BRATS 2015 and ISLES 2015. Our method is computationally efficient, which allows its adoption in a variety of research and clinical settings. The source code of our implementation is made publicly available.

The biggest debate going on this year at the Consumer Electronics Show is, what exactly was really new, inventive, breakthrough? Walking the floor of the show brought close-ups of a lot of connected gadgets for smart everything - homes, cities, cars, lights, weights, watches, clothes, appliances, energy, health and so on. The smartest of these Internet of things leveraged artificial intelligence to make them more useful. But while these and all the Alexi and Siri-powered gadgets sound like must haves in a new age for electronics, you have to wonder how many of these odd devices are really necessary, or just another digital nuisance or toy. Do we really need a digitally connected, data intensive toothbrush, lawn mower, cat pop scooper or dumbbell, just to name a few examples.

Virtual reality and robotics will become widely adopted in education in the next two to three years, while wearable devices are expected to become mainstream in the education space over the next four to five years, according to a recent report published by the New Media Consortium and the Consortium for School Networking. The "NMC/CoSN Horizon Report: 2016 Kโ€“12 Edition" examined emerging technologies for their potential impact on and use in teaching, learning and creative inquiry in schools. The report, released at the end of 2016, looked at tech trends in the short term (one year or less), mid-term (two to three years) and long term (four to five years. The VR market in general is certainly heating up. Goldman Sachs recently estimated that virtual and augmented reality entertainment revenue will reach $3.2 billion by 2025, while the education sector will attract 15 million users, the report said.


Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn's Vision On The Future Of The Auto Industry

At this year's CES Show, an event now more synonymous with cars than consumer electronics, keynote speaker and Renault Nissan Alliance CEO Carlos Ghosn spoke with Frost & Sullivan about his vision on the Future of the Car Industry, the pressures and challenges he is expecting, as well as insight on key announcements Nissan made at the event. Ghosn highlighted three key mega trends that will define the future of the automotive industry. The first was the drive for zero emissions, in which he predicted that 25 percent of all cars sold in urban areas will be electric by 2030. The second trend focused on the customer's need for autonomous and driverless vehicles, in particular in commercial applications (taxi, logistics, etc.) . Lastly, he highlighted Connected Cars & Services. Ghosn predicts 100 percent of all cars, globally, will be connected by 2025, with connected services around sharedservices (car sharing, ride sharing, etc.) becoming hugely prominent.
