From Self-Flying Helicopters to Classrooms of the Future
On a summer day four years ago, a Stanford University computer-science professor named Andrew Ng held an unusual air show on a field near the campus. His fleet of small helicopter drones flew under computer control, piloted by artificial-intelligence software that could teach itself to fly after watching a human operator. By the end of the day, the copters were hot-dogging--flipping, rolling, even hovering upside down. It was a milestone for the field of "machine learning," the same area of artificial intelligence that lets Amazon recommend books based on a shopper's previous habits and helps Google tailor search results to a user's behavior. Mr. Ng and his team of graduate students showed that artificial-intelligence software could control one of the hardest-to-maneuver vehicles and keep it stable while flying at 45 miles an hour.

Artificial intelligence: the investment of 2017 and beyond
The rise of artificial intelligence (AI) has, for the last couple of years, dominated headlines as technologies associated with AI advance and appetite grows exponentially for AI products. Key market players in industries too many to mention are looking towards AI innovation to stay ahead of their competitors and gain market share, seeing AI as the catalyst for success. This appetite only serves to make AI start-ups a more attractive proposition to the global VC community. AI spending is forecasted to grow from $640m in 2016 to $37bn by 2025, according to market research firm Tractica. Tractica's research director, Aditya Kaul, told website Datanami that cases like image recognition, algorithmic securities trading and healthcare patient data management, "have huge scale potential", as well as in areas such as business services, consumer products, industry (industrial robotics), advertising, finance, media and defence.

Neural Networks with R โ A Simple Example
In this tutorial a neural network (or Multilayer perceptron depending on naming convention) will be build that is able to take a number and calculate the square root (or as close to as possible). Later tutorials will build upon this to make forcasting / trading models.The R library'neuralnet' will be used to train and build the neural network. There is lots of good literature on neural networks freely available on the internet, a good starting point is the neural network handout by Dr Mark Gayles at the Engineering Department Cambridge University http://mi.eng.cam.ac.uk/ mjfg/local/I10/i10_hand4.pdf, it covers just enough to get an understanding of what a neural network is and what it can do without being too mathematically advanced to overwhelm the reader. The tutorial will produce the neural network shown in the image below. It is going to take a single input (the number that you want square rooting) and produce a single output (the square root of the input).
TomTom acquires Autonomos to beef up in self-driving technology
Navigation and mapping company TomTom -- which provides data to companies like Uber and Apple as well as for its own GPS systems -- has made an acquisition to add more autonomous driving technology to its platform. It has acquired Autonomos, a Berlin startup that has worked in R&D consultancy for various self-driving projects out of Germany. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed. Autonomos was founded in 2012 by a group of computer science and artificial intelligence academics who had worked on driving projects at the Free University of Berlin. That has included building vehicles for the DARPA Grand Challenge competitions.
Amazon Alexa's smart home dominance is fragile without a global launch
"Alexa, why are you winning the smart home market?" It seems every appliance that's any appliance is adding Alexa support at CES 2017, giving Amazon a commanding lead in the race to become the de facto smart home standard. As someone who lives in Australia, where Amazon Echo hasn't launched, though, I'm left wondering when we'll get to join Alexa's gang. In the battle to become the brand that's synonymous with the smart home experience, building a global footprint will become important very soon. In a global market, selling to two of 200 countries won't keep you in the driver's seat for long.
