Acast, a technology platform for on-demand audio and podcasting, has launched Recommendations: a function that utilises a machine learning algorithm to surface new, tailored content for its users, similar to Spotify's Discover. During the feature's beta phase, Acast extracted data over a period of two weeks which showed that users are 52% more likely to follow a show if it is recommended to them by the algorithm, and 49% more likely to listen to multiple episodes of a show recommended by Acast. Johan Billgren, Acast CTO, comments: "Searching for new podcasts is hard and often time-consuming. We want our users to spend their time listening to great podcasts, rather than looking for them, and that is why we are launching Recommendations. Our machine learning algorithm, which we began testing in October last year, gets to know preferences over time by learning from a user's choices and then recommending new shows that they will like."

As Valentine's Day approaches, a recent report shows North Americans lead the rest of the world when it comes to dating app engagement. North America has a dating app subscription rate 7.2 times that of Europe and 2.6 times more than Asia. User acquisition firm Liftoff, released its annual review of dating app trends and insights. Liftoff analyzed nearly three billion dating app ad impressions across more than one million app installs and 3.4 million post-install events in 2016. If you think dating app subscriptions spike just before Valentine's Day, the report shows that's not the case.

The coastal prefecture of Fukushima has faced a difficult road since a devastating earthquake and tsunami rocked the area in 2011, killing tens of thousands and causing its nuclear reactor to melt down, leaking radiation and rendering the surrounding provinces uninhabitable. Since then, the plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), has been working to clean and decommission the facility. In January, the company bumped its estimate for a full cleaning to $188 billion, noting it would probably take decades. Radiation levels from the reactors should have faded over time, but TEPCO said Thursday levels inside the Fukushima Daiichi plant reached such astronomical levels, not even a cleaning robot could survive inside. The previous radiation high, measured one year after the disaster, was 73 Sieverts per hour.

Russia released drone footage Monday showing new destruction in Syria's historic town of Palmyra, which was recently recaptured by the Islamic State group, and warned that the militants could be planning the further demolition of antiquities. The Russian Defense Ministry says Syrian government forces are advancing toward the town as another battle for the ancient site looms. The video showed that the militants have badly damaged the facade of the Roman-era amphitheater and the Tetrapylon -- a set of four monuments with four columns each at the center of the colonnaded road leading to the theater. The video appears to show that only two of the 16 columns remain standing. IS militants have destroyed ancient sites across their self-styled Islamic caliphate in Syria and Iraq, perceiving them as monuments to idolatry.

Apple has joined the business group for wireless charging, lending credence to rumours that the new iPhone will feature the technology. Rumours have swirled for years that Apple has been looking to embrace the technology, which gets rid of charging cables. That Samsung is planning to release two different-sized models of the Galaxy S8 has long been common knowledge, but new leaks add weight to the suggestion that the larger version of the phone will dwarf most other handsets on the market. Up, up and away: Dubai hopes to have a passenger-carrying drone regularly buzzing through the skyline of this futuristic city-state in July. The arrival of the Chinese-made EHang 184 -- which already has had its flying debut over Dubai's iconic, sail-shaped Burj al-Arab skyscraper hotel -- comes as the Emirati city also has partnered with other cutting-edge technology companies, including Hyperloop One. The question is whether the egg-shaped, four-legged craft will really take off as a transportation alternative in this car-clogged city already home to the world's longest driverless metro line. Mattar al-Tayer, the head of Dubai's Roads & Transportation Agency, announced plans to have the craft regularly flying at the World Government Summit. Before his remarks on Monday, most treated the four-legged, eight-propeller craft as just another curiosity at an event that views itself as a desert Davos.
