For years organisations around the world have tried to in vain to become a paper-less organisation. The recent surge in digitisation and mobilisation of processes has helped bring many closer, but very few have actually achieved this goal. In fact, it's far more accurate in my view to talk about being a less-paper-reliant organisation than a paper-less one. Many, many organisations still use paper for one reason or another. The question I'd like to raise today, is whether we'll be having the same conversation and experience as regards our people because AI and robots continue their advance?

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has doubled down on his support of a universal basic income as a possible solution for unemployment caused by the rise of machines equipped with artificial intelligence taking over the workforce. A universal basic income would give a standard amount of money to every citizen to cover basic expenses like food and living costs each month. 7-year-old girl asked Google for a job and got a response

Some kids want to be astronauts, firefighters or chefs when they grow up – but one little girl has her sights set on one of the biggest tech companies in the world. Chloe Bridgewater, age 7, sent Google a handwritten letter noting her computer skills and expressing interest in working at a place that provides bean-bag chairs and go-karts for their employees. The'Google boss', CEO Sundar Pichai, replied telling Chloe that he looks'forward to receiving' her job application and encouraged the young girl to follow her dreams. Chloe, who lives in Hereford, England, was inspired to write the letter after seeing images of Google offices filled with comfy bean-bags, go-karts and slides. And the original letter was shared with Matt Weinberger of Business Insider by Chloe's father Andy Bridgewater.


Constraint-Based Verification of a Mobile App Game Designed for Nudging People to Attend Cancer Screening

In Norway, cervical cancer prevention involves the participation of as many eligible women aged 25-69 years as possible. However, reaching and inviting every eligible women to attend cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination is difficult. Using social nudging and gamification in modern means of communication can encourage the participation of unscreened people. Simula Research Laboratory together with the Cancer Registry of Norway have developed FightHPV, a mobile app game intended to inform adolescent and eligible women about cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination while they play and, to facilitate their further participation to prevention campaigns. However, game design and health information transfer can be hard to reconcile, as the design of each game episode is more guided by the release of information than gameplay and playing difficulty. In this paper, we propose a constraint-based model of FightHPV to evaluate the difficulty of each episode and to help the game designer in improving the player experience. This approach is relevant to facilitate social nudging of eligible women to participate to cervical cancer screening and HPV vaccination, as shown by the initial deployment of FightHPV and tests performed in focus groups. The design of this mobile app can thus be regarded as a new application case of Artificial Intelligence techniques such as gamification and constraint programming.

Magnetic Control Could Help Robots Navigate Inside Your Body

There are two options for controlling a robot inside of the human body: Either you try and build some sort of intricate and tiny robot submarine with self contained propulsion and navigation, which would be really really hard to do, or you just make the robot with a tiny bit of something that responds to magnetic fields, and control it externally with some big magnets. The latter approach is vastly less complicated, but it has one major drawback, which is that it's very hard to manage multiple robots. Here's the problem: Magnetic fields, being fields, aren't easily constrained to specific areas. Realistically, if you're using something like a clinical MRI scanner to create a magnetic field, whatever gradient you give the field will affect everything inside of the MRI, whether you've got one single microbot or a vast swarm of them. If you want two different robots to do two different things, you're out of luck.


Tiny 3D-printed camera lens could give drones vision like ours

One lens is good, four lenses are better. A tiny camera combines four 3D-printed lenses to mimic natural vision – with super-sharp focus in a central area and wider peripheral vision. The miniaturised camera could be used in insect-sized surveillance drones, to hone in on details without losing track of what's happening elsewhere. A spot at the back of our eyes called the fovea is crammed with a higher concentration of light-sensitive cells than the surrounding regions, giving us sharp vision in the centre of our field of view while objects closer to the edges of our vision are less well-defined. The lenses with longer focal lengths capture high detail over a narrow field of view, while the lenses with short focal lengths capture low detail over a wider field of view.
