Facebook encourages people to fall out, professor of communication says
The way Facebook is designed means people are destined to fall out and suffer severe emotional wounding, claims one professor. The site forces people to talk carelessly and not listen to each other, according to Glenn Sparks. And because people are "friends" with so many people, there are a lot of people to fall out with and users experiences traumatic scenarios as a result, the professor and communications expert claimed. All of that happens because the site is terrible at letting people talk with nuance, he said. That means that people are unable to express their feelings about politics or other sensitive topics properly – and end up falling out.
App lets people easily take photos with any dead person they like and bring them 'back to life'
A new app promises to let people take selfies with anyone they like – including dead people or celebrities. ELROIS, a South Korean company, only needs a 3D scan of any person's face for its "With Me" app. Once it has one, it can'resurrect' that person – allowing them to react to what you say and move around, as well as letting you take pictures with them. The app has been explicitly created to allow people to recreate the image and personality of someone who has passed away, according to its creators. They said that it is a way of overcoming a broken heart by interacting with a virtual recreation of their deceased loved ones.
Japan's Fukushima site waste is BLOCKING robot probes
Robot probes sent in to study Japan's Fukushima site keep failing during their recon missions. The radiation levels at the site are so high that previous clean-up bots have struggled to withstand conditions within the reactor for long. Now the head of decommissioning for the damaged Fukushima nuclear plant said on Thursday that the company's robots were not able to get close enough to the core area. For all the mishegas about self-driving cars in the sunny, techie Silicon Valley, the future of the automobile may still live in a colder clime. At least, the Wolverine State hasn't loosened its grip on the future of traffic. Ann Arbor plays home to the University of Michigan, and with the football games, Kid Rock concerts, and daily commuters comes traffic, and lots of it. On the average weekday, the 125,000-person town swells to hold 200,000 people, most of whom travel in by personal car. The city is exploring buses, commuter rail, and carpool options to clear up its roads, but knows it can't drive the car out of its home state anytime soon.
DEEP LEARNING PLATFORMS & GPUS: AN INTERVIEW WITH BRYAN CATANZARO
High-performance graphics cards, typically associated with gaming, have become popular over the last few years in an area many might not expect: artificial intelligence. Many experts attribute recent acceleration of success in AI to a wider availability and use of graphics processing units (GPUs), as their advantages include cores designed for running multiple tasks simultaneously, which can efficiently handle the vector and matrix operations that are prevalent in deep learning. Training and deploying state of the art deep neural networks is very computationally intensive, and, while modern GPUs offer high density computation, researchers need more than a fast processor -- they also need optimized libraries, and tools to efficiently program so that they can experiment with new ideas. Bryan Catanzaro, VP of Applied Deep Learning Research at NVIDIA, joined us at the 2017 Deep Learning Summit in San Francisco, to share expertise on GPUs and platforms for deep learning, as well as giving insights on the latest deep learning developments at NVIDIA. I asked him some questions at the summit to learn more about his work. What motivated you to begin your work in deep learning?

Kay Firth-Butterfield: One of the things that stick out in my mind is some research that McKinsey did recently, where they describe AI as a contributing factor to the transformation of society. And I just want to quote what they're saying about the transformation of our society: that it's happening ten times faster, and at three hundred times the scale, or roughly three thousand times faster than the impact of the industrial revolution. And you know, a lot of people compare this revolution to the industrial revolution. But, I think it's the speed and the real, core underpinning that AI is contributing to that transformation of our society that makes these discussions so important. David Bray: It's not just about handing over judgment and decisions to a machine that a human would do otherwise.
Sneak peek inside two Robotics Innovation Facilities (RIFs) in Europe
Robotics Innovation Facilities, or RIFs, are robotic labs, financed via the ECHORD project by the European Commission. They offer access to high-tech robotic equipment and expertise at zero risk; using the RIF is not only free of charge, they also safeguard their users' intellectual property. Companies, institutions, and organisations can apply to use RIFs. Currently, there are three RIFs within the ECHORD project located in Italy, France, and the UK. Two 360 Lab Tours are now available, the last video will be released late March.
New app uses facial recognition software to identify art
The consumption of music was revolutionised with the launch of Shazam. And now an art gallery equivalent has been created which plans to replicate its industry-changing success with a similar model. Technology entrepreneurs in London have devised a smartphone app called Smartify which uses image recognition software to scan, identify and save digital copies of artist creations onto a user's device. In addition to offering a detailed description of paintings, drawings and sketches, it will work across any gallery with digitised content. In direct competition with venues offering audio tours, it will also provide video commentary.
