The first generation of police body cameras was introduced in 2005 in Great Britain. Their primary task was, and still is, to record police interactions with the public as well as to gather evidence at crime scenes. To separate the irrelevant data from incriminating evidence, every recording needs to be reviewed and edited. Now imagine sifting through hundreds of hours of police footage, looking for a specific piece of information, such as a verbal exchange between an officer and a suspect, a clear shot of license plates, or a suspect entering a particular building or meeting a particular person. It's a rather time-consuming task, so a lot of this footage ends up archived to be reviewed later, forfeiting potentially valuable or time-sensitive evidence. The solution could be the use of artificial intelligence.

EVE Online gamers will seek real exoplanets in virtual universe
If you enjoy navigating distant galaxies, leading intergalactic alliances and fighting space pirates, you might want to take on another challenge: discovering real planets. The space-based online game EVE Online, which bills itself as "the world's largest living work of science fiction", is delving into science fact by asking players to help search for planets outside our solar system. Details of the citizen science challenge, which is part of an initiative called Project Discovery, emerged at the game's annual Fanfest event in Reykjavik, Iceland, last week. A mini-game launching later this year within the EVE universe will present players with data from the now defunct COROT space observatory, which launched in 2006. They will be looking at luminosity curves, representing the change in a star's brightness as a planet passes in front of it.

Esperanto alive, well and still hopeful, 100 years after its creation
BIALYSTOK, POLAND – Instead of a hello, the head of the Esperanto association in the Polish city of Bialystok opts for "saluton," a sign that the universal language created by Ludwik Zamenhof is alive and well a century after the Jewish doctor's death. "Zamenhof created Esperanto as a counterweight to national languages, which he believed divided people and were a source of conflict," said association President Przemyslaw Wierzbowski. "Today, we know that it's economic, ethnic or religious differences that divide people, but Esperanto still has the goal of uniting us, helping us communicate," the 30-year-old added. Wierzbowski spoke from a table at Esperanto Cafe, which is located in a tower within the eastern city's market square, just steps away from where Zamenhof was born in 1859. During the 19th century, the tower was at the heart of a market packed with stalls that were manned by German, Jewish, Lithuanian and Polish merchants.

AI Recommendations That Know You Better Than You Know Yourself
Every day, millions of people make buying decisions based on search – products to buy, restaurants in the neighborhood, and tons of other choices. According to the Nielsen Report "Global Trust in Advertising" however, while consumers rely on online opinions or price comparisons, more often than not, it's word-of-mouth recommendations that are the most effective. The most credible advertising comes straight from the people we know and trust, and over 83% of respondents completely or somewhat trust the suggestions of friends and family. So when we make a final decision to buy, it's reasonable to assume that we ask a spouse, relatives or close friends for advice. After all, they are the ones who know us, our tastes, preferences, sense of fashion, etc.
The robot regulator: UK watchdog reveals use of machine learning
The UK's Pensions Regulator (TPR) has built a machine-learning tool to help it focus on pension schemes most at risk of breaching its guidelines. Peter Jackson, head of data at TPR, outlined on a government blog how the watchdog had worked with data scientists to make better use of the "scheme returns", TPR's main source of pension scheme data. Data scientists from the Government Digital Service (GDS) built the machine-learning model to "predict future pension scheme behaviour", Jackson said. "As we have data about pension schemes going back several years, labelled with whether they complied with the requirement to submit a scheme return, we were able to build a supervised machine-learning model that learns from our existing data and can be used to make predictions about how a pension scheme will behave," he said. The final model now being implemented by TPR splits the UK schemes it oversees into 30 groups.
European Robotics League gearing up for 2017-2018 season
The European Robotics League has closed a successful first season. Funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 Programme for research, the ERL brings a common framework for two indoor robotics competitions, ERL Industrial Robots and ERL Service Robots and one outdoor robotics competition, ERL Emergency Robots. The three competitions are designed to target three clear objectives: the European societal challenge of an aging population, the strengthening of the European robotics industry and the use of autonomous systems for emergency response. The last tournament of the ERL season 2016/17 took place at the Leon@Home Test bed located at the Módulo de Investigación en Cibernética of the Universidad de León, Spain. The ERL Service Robots local competition organised by Dr Vicente Matellan and the Leon Robotics Group was held from the 13-17 March and consisted of several trials, which mainly took place on the last day.
