Drones flying into prisons to be examined by new police team

The Prison Service and the police are to pool intelligence to tackle the problem of drones flying drugs and mobile phones to prisoners in jails. They will forensically examine captured drones to try to find out who was flying them. The invention of easy-to-fly, remote-controlled aircraft has caused a huge security headache for prisons. The national initiative will involve police and prison officers from all around England and Wales. They will share information about the types of quadcopters and methods used, in an attempt to curb the problem.


AI can predict heart attacks more accurately than doctors

An estimated 20 million people die each year due to cardiovascular disease. Luckily, a team of researchers from the University of Nottingham in the UK have developed a machine-learning algorithm that can predict your likelihood of having a heart attack or stroke as well as any doctor. The American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) has developed a series of guidelines for estimating a patient's cardiovascular risk which is based on eight factors including age, cholesterol level and blood pressure. That's pretty accurate but Stephen Weng and his team set about to make it better. They built four computer learning algorithms, then fed them data from 378,256 patients in the United Kingdom.

A river of red-hot lava was caught flowing out from Mount Etna in breathtaking new drone footage. Smoking magma can be see rolling down the snow-topped mountainside as the drone glides in and out of the red-hot flow. The latest outpouring comes just weeks after an eruption forced a BBC reporter and a scientist to flee for their lives. Etna, at 3,330 metres (10,926 feet), is the highest volcano in mainland Europe. The volcano, one of the most active in the world, has been largely dormant for the last two years.

Robots will soon deliver Hermes parcels in London

Self-driving'Starship' robots from the makers of Skype are trundling along the streets of London delivering Hermes parcels as part of a trial to test the technology. The slow-moving delivery bots have already been trialled across the world, including in Hamburg, Washington and California, delivering everything from groceries to takeout pizza. Now the boxy ground drones will offer a helping hand to the UK delivery service Hermes by bringing packages to people living in the capital. A Starship robot waits for a London bus at the crossing. Unlike robots designed to resemble humans, the Starship's bot is purely functional with a large compartment to hold deliveries, the equivalent size of two grocery bags.

A Security Monitoring Framework For Virtualization Based HEP Infrastructures

High Energy Physics (HEP) distributed computing infrastructures require automatic tools to monitor, analyze and react to potential security incidents. These tools should collect and inspect data such as resource consumption, logs and sequence of system calls for detecting anomalies that indicate the presence of a malicious agent. They should also be able to perform automated reactions to attacks without administrator intervention. We describe a novel framework that accomplishes these requirements, with a proof of concept implementation for the ALICE experiment at CERN. We show how we achieve a fully virtualized environment that improves the security by isolating services and Jobs without a significant performance impact. We also describe a collected dataset for Machine Learning based Intrusion Prevention and Detection Systems on Grid computing. This dataset is composed of resource consumption measurements (such as CPU, RAM and network traffic), logfiles from operating system services, and system call data collected from production Jobs running in an ALICE Grid test site and a big set of malware. This malware was collected from security research sites. Based on this dataset, we will proceed to develop Machine Learning algorithms able to detect malicious Jobs.


Boosting with Structural Sparsity: A Differential Inclusion Approach

Boosting as gradient descent algorithms is one popular method in machine learning. In this paper a novel Boosting-type algorithm is proposed based on restricted gradient descent with structural sparsity control whose underlying dynamics are governed by differential inclusions. In particular, we present an iterative regularization path with structural sparsity where the parameter is sparse under some linear transforms, based on variable splitting and the Linearized Bregman Iteration. Hence it is called \emph{Split LBI}. Despite its simplicity, Split LBI outperforms the popular generalized Lasso in both theory and experiments. A theory of path consistency is presented that equipped with a proper early stopping, Split LBI may achieve model selection consistency under a family of Irrepresentable Conditions which can be weaker than the necessary and sufficient condition for generalized Lasso. Furthermore, some $\ell_2$ error bounds are also given at the minimax optimal rates. The utility and benefit of the algorithm are illustrated by several applications including image denoising, partial order ranking of sport teams, and world university grouping with crowdsourced ranking data.
