Apple has given Siri a new voice. The virtual chatterbox found inside the iPhone now sounds much smarter and more human, according to the company, which unveiled the changes at WWDC. The new voice uses machine learning to replicate the way that people actually speak, according to Apple's engineering head Craig Federighi. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. Apple has announced iOS 11, the latest version of its mobile operating system that boasts a variety of small, yet important, improvements. Messages, for instance, now syncs across all of your devices via iCloud and gains a redesigned app drawer for better discovery. Apple Pay is now capable of letting you send cash to other people via iMessage, with the payments authenticated with Touch ID. Siri, meanwhile, gets automatic translation native to its voice interface, a feature that's been sorely lacking in previous versions Siri isn't just a voice assistant anymore, and Apple is pushing the idea that it does a similar job to Google Assistant on Android. For instance, contextual learning and predictive suggestions will be synced across all of your devices, hoping to know what you need before you do.

That's a broad topic which has been treated many times. Much of what has been written on this topic is good, much is bad. But I find that the stats vs. machine learning argument, at that level, tends to focus on the forest at the cost of completely overlooking the trees. Shah's definitions, which I believe are reflective of many approaches, tend to focus on different ends of the respective spectrums of each of these concepts, treating machine learning as a practical activity and statistics as a theoretical abstraction (and, yes, I'm lumping "statistical modeling" together with "statistics" in this case... at least, for now). The relationship between statistics and machine learning is actually a highly complex one, and merely defining the 2 concepts is not helpful in dissecting this connection.


Scientists Made a Huge Library of Atari Gameplay to Give AI a Power Up

Artificial intelligence is slowly proving that that video games aren't a total waste of time, at least for machines: It's through learning to play games that AI algorithms can acquire all sorts of generalizable skills, like problem-solving. Now, computer scientists from RWTH Aachen University in Germany and Microsoft Research have released the largest-ever database of human playthroughs for some of the most popular games for the Atari 2600. Artificial agents using deep learning techniques will be able to pull patterns out of these playthroughs and learn from them. According to a paper posted to the arXiv preprint server this week, which is undergoing peer review, the database contains more than 45 hours of gameplay from five games: Q*Bert, Ms. Pacman, Space Invaders, Video Pinball, and Montezuma's Revenge. Video games are an increasingly popular training ground for AI to solve general problems, like how to quickly arrive at a course of action, or how to effectively learn in an environment where the rewards for learning are sparse, which is notoriously the case for Montezuma's Revenge .

Though WWDC is mostly a software event, because it's a developer conference, it does sometimes use it to show off software. This year that's rumoured to be the premiere of its Siri speaker, alongside updated versions of the iPad and Mac. But one thing will very much be lacking in that lineup: the iPhone.
