'Intriguing anomalies' could rewrite the rules of physics

A new finding could shake the very foundations of our understanding of particle physics, and the universe. A review of three separate experiments, including one conducted at the Large Hadron Collider, has turned up'remarkably similar' results. The studies suggest that lepton universality - a fundamental assumption of the standard model - does not hold up. Instead, they point to the existence of a new phenomenon that exists outside of the standard model of particle physics. Earlier this year, researchers with Cern's LHCb experiment (pictured) found'intriguing anomalies', a discovery that has now been used as one of the three pieces of research included in a new Nature review.

Google, Facebook and Twitter should share users' information to fight piracy and terrorism, says report

Technology giants such as Facebook, Google, YouTube and Twitter need to collaborate in order to catch pirates and terrorists, says a new report. It calls on the companies to start sharing information about users, in a similar manner to how casinos share information with each other to catch cheats. According to the document, doing so could help combat a wide variety of issues including hacking, malware, fake news and child pornography. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. Artificial intelligence (AI) has come a long way over the past decade and already some of these applications are outpacing the capabilities of their creators in various different fields, ranging from beating Go champions to outguessing cardiac surgeons. Some experts are even suggesting that AI willfully exceeds human intelligence within the next three decades. The field of medicine has seen the great benefits of AI directly in many cases. Just recently s group of researchers forms the University of Nottingham, U.K. developed a machine learning algorithm that had the ability to predict a patient's chances of having a heart attack or stroke. It turned out that the algorithm was more accurate than the guidelines issued by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (ACC/AHA).


Ravens can remember people who have tricked them

Ravens have long been said to posses impressive intelligence and it seems they also remember people who treat them unfairly. Researchers have found that the creatures could recall trainers who gave them a raw deal by stealing their food up to a month later. The findings add to a growing understanding of the highly intelligent behaviour demonstrated by the corvid family of birds, which includes crows, ravens, magpies and others. Researchers from the University of Vienna have found that ravens (pictured) can remember being conned by human trainers up to a month after they last had contact. A group of ravens were trained to trade chunks of bread for lumps of cheese.


SoftBank to buy two walking robot manufacturers from Google's parent company Alphabet

SoftBank said it would buy two firms that build walking robots from Google's parent company, Alphabet, adding to the Japanese company's growing artificial intelligence portfolio. SoftBank said it would buy Boston Dynamics and Tokyo-based Schaft, which design and manufacture robots that simulate human movement, but did not disclose the terms of the transactions. Shares of the company rose as much as 7.9 per cent after the deal was announced, hitting a 17-year high. "Smart robotics are going to be a key driver of the next stage of the information revolution, and Marc (Raibert) and his team at Boston Dynamics are the clear technology leaders in advanced dynamic robots," SoftBank chairman Masayoshi Son said in a statement on Friday. Mr Raibert is chief executive and founder of Boston Dynamics. SoftBank has embarked on an aggressive acquisition campaign to boost its research and development capabilities.
