Microsoft launches a new AI startup program at Station F in Paris
Microsoft is rethinking its strategy when it comes to startup acceleration in Paris. The company is going to focus on artificial intelligence. This will lead to a new program for AI startups at Station F. Microsoft has had a startup accelerator in the Sentier neighborhood for a few years now. When Station F opens at the end of June, the company is going to focus exclusively on artificial intelligence with a partnership with INRIA and move everything to the startup campus. "We think that we're first going to select 5 or 6 startups that can foster an ecosystem around INRIA and themselves," Microsoft France Developer Experience leader Christophe Shaw told me.

A new kernel-based approach to system identification with quantized output data

In this paper we introduce a novel method for linear system identification with quantized output data. We model the impulse response as a zero-mean Gaussian process whose covariance (kernel) is given by the recently proposed stable spline kernel, which encodes information on regularity and exponential stability. This serves as a starting point to cast our system identification problem into a Bayesian framework. We employ Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods to provide an estimate of the system. In particular, we design two methods based on the so-called Gibbs sampler that allow also to estimate the kernel hyperparameters by marginal likelihood maximization via the expectation-maximization method. Numerical simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, as compared to the state-of-the-art kernel-based methods when these are employed in system identification with quantized data.

Because of this, they have spent billions of dollars into research and development for the advancement of AI, a move that will place artificial intelligence in control of almost every sector of the society. Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple, IBM, and Facebook along with China's Baidu and Alibaba have spent a total of $58.2 billion in research and development. That price is more than what any of some developed countries are spending on the same activity. For example the UK only spent $53.5 billion on research and development while Russia spent $47.6 billion.
Time Series Analysis with Generalized Additive Models
Whenever you spot a trend plotted against time, you would be looking at a time series. The de facto choice for studying financial market performance and weather forecasts, time series are one of the most pervasive analysis techniques because of its inextricable relation to time--we are always interested to foretell the future. One intuitive way to make forecasts would be to refer to recent time points. Today's stock prices would likely be more similar to yesterday's prices than those from five years ago. Hence, we would give more weight to recent than to older prices in predicting today's price. These correlations between past and present values demonstrate temporal dependence, which forms the basis of a popular time series analysis technique called ARIMA (Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average).
AirQuadOne: The quadbike that doubles as a flying car
A new flying quadbike is set to be presented at the upcoming International Paris Airshow. The Vertical Take-off and Landing aircraft, called the AirQuadOne, can reach altitudes of 3,000 feet (914 meters) and flight speeds of up to 50 miles per hour (80 kilometers per hour). The'flying quad' could be used as a means for personal transportation, as well as a replacement for cranes and helicopters or emergency cars. The flying quad bike, developed by Neva Aerospace, is a fully-electrical vehicle that is expected to weight around 500 kilograms (1,102 pounds). Its applications include extreme sports and leisure, parcel transportation, robotic maintenance, active defense and heavy lifting.
Queen's Speech: Government to announce plans for commercial space flights and ports for spaceships
Powers planned by the Government aiming to pave the way for commercial space flights in Britain will be included in the Queen's Speech alongside a raft of investments in transport infrastructure. The legislation, according to Department for Transport (DfT), will allow the launch of satellites from the UK for the first time, horizontal flights to the edge of space for scientific experiments and the establishment of spaceports in regions across Britain. The Queen's Speech, which has been delayed by two days due to the current instability in British politics, will also include measures to improve conditions for the 100,000 drivers of plug-in vehicles by "removing barriers that are preventing more drivers switching to electric". "As things stand, those wanting to use publicly-accessible charging points may need to register with several different companies that run them," the Department for Transport added. "The planned legislation will include measures to ensure drivers need register only once to make full use of the existing infrastructure."
