Many articles and blog post have been written about the impact of artificial intelligence and machine learning on the recruitment and talent acquisition industry. Most of these outline concepts and ideas but are void of data. In January we started testing Pocket Recruiter - an artificial intelligent matching engine - within Advanced Resource Managers (ARM), a UK based, STEM focused recruitment consultancy. In the blog post "Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest matching engine of them all" I explained how we chose Pocket Recruiter and the initial results it delivered for the automotive desk. The team of Richard Brown has continued to work with Pocket Recruiter and has collected data on the business impact.


Microsoft's plan to stop thieves stealing laptops revealed by patent

Microsoft has filed a new patent designed to discourage potential laptop thieves. The document describes functionality that would bring the devices in line with smartphones, which users can remotely disable and wipe, in order to prevent thieves from re-selling them. Microsoft's patent shows off a similar system for laptops, which remain a popular target for criminals. Users would be able to remotely disable a stolen laptop in much the same way, which should lead to a reduction in incidents of laptop theft. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph.


Assistive robots compete in Bristol

The Bristol Robotics Laboratory (BRL) will host the first European- Commission funded European Robotics League (ERL) tournament for service robots to be held in the UK. Two teams from the BRL and Birmingham will pitch their robots against each other in a series of events from 26 and 30 June. Robots designed to support people with care-related tasks in the home will be put to the test in a simulated home test bed. The assisted living robots of the two teams will face various challenges, including understanding natural speech and finding and retrieving objects for the user. The robots will also have to greet visitors at the door appropriately, such as welcoming a doctor on their visit, or turning away unwanted visitors.

"Connected to other part," my iPhone says to me as I stand somewhere in London's Soho, trying to decipher the letter on the top of a bus stop. "Hello?" says an American woman, reminding me of Scarlett Johansson's disembodied artificially intelligent character from the sci-fi film Her. "Hey, er … can you give me a hand by reading the letter on the bus stop?" "Sure … can you move your phone a bit more up, and to the left … Ya! I thank her, end the session, pull up Citymapper and navigate my way onto the 453 going to New Cross. I have a little bit of vision, but only enough to see motion and movement. I am using an app called Be My Eyes, an app that connects blind and visually impaired people to sighted volunteers via a remote video connection. Through the phone's camera, the blind person is able to show the sighted individual what they are looking at in the real world, allowing the volunteer to assist them with any of their vision-related problems. I began to lose my sight in the summer of 2013 to a rare genetic mitochondrial disease called Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy and was soon registered blind. I consequently found myself relying on an assortment of assistive technologies to do the simplest of tasks. Be My Eyes has just over 35,000 visually-impaired users registered for the app and over half a million volunteers. Whenever a visually impaired user requests assistance a sighted volunteer receives a notification and a video connection is established. Jose Ranola, a 55-year-old from the Philippines who works in construction and has retinitis pigmentosa, said: "I use it to help me identify medicine and read printed materials and also to describe places and objects." He adds: "All my experiences were good.


How AI Is Transforming Drug Creation

On a recent Friday in Boston, Randell Sanders gave a nurse two samples of his blood, plus a sample of urine and saliva. Clinicians would test some of the samples to see how he is responding to treatment for pancreatic cancer. But samples also were sent to a lab where computers using artificial intelligence are changing the way pharmaceutical companies develop drugs. The idea is that machines, which are adept at pattern recognition, can sift through vast amounts of new and existing genetic, metabolic and clinical information to unravel the complex biological networks that underpin diseases. That, in turn, can help identify medications likely to work in specific patient populations, while simultaneously steering companies away from drugs that are likely to fail.


Professor in Artificial Intelligence - Center for Artificial Intelligence Research

The Department of ICT has several large and active research groups in Information and Communication Technology including 12 Professors, 15 Associate Professors, 10 Assistant professors and about 15 Research Fellows on the PhD programme in ICT. The department pursues a variety of research interests, focusing especially on Wireless Communications and Embedded Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics, Crisis Management, eLearning and eHealth. The department has successfully led a number of large research projects funded by the Research Council of Norway; the EU research programmes FP7 and H2020, as well as national and international industries. CAIR opened on March 2nd, 2017. At startup the centre will host 13 researchers, whose most prominent research contributions can be found within: bandit algorithms, Bayesian learning, probabilistic reasoning, ant colony optimization, pattern recognition, learning automata, natural language processing, and stochastic optimization.


Bitville

Bitville has launched a major research project to investigate various alternatives about how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be harnessed to assist in human learning. The research project is funded partly by Tekes, and it belongs to the Team Finland Augmented Intelligence campaign. Tekes is a governmental expert organization for funding research, development and innovation in Finland. The length of the project is six months, and will be conducted by Bitville's AI team. The solutions will be based on deep neural networks, also known as "deep learning".

Last month, Sudhakar Choudhari took the company bus as usual from his one-bedroom apartment to the suburban offices of Tech Mahindra, a major employer of workers in India that powers the global technology machine behind the scenes. Then a manager took him into a conference room and asked him to resign. "It was a terrible scene for me," said Mr. Choudhari, 41, who had been with the company for 11 years and most recently maintained software for a British client. Cardillo, the director of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, (NGA), announced his push toward "automation" and "AI" at a conference this week in San Antonio. The annual conference, hosted by the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation, brings together technologists, soldiers, and intelligence professionals to discuss national security threats, changes in technology, and data collection and processing. AI is on the rise, and last year former President Barack Obama's White House created a Defcon Scale for Cyberattacks, and released a white paper on its potential future impacts in the final months of the administration, and police forces around the world are increasingly using preliminary "pre-crime" technologies to predict when, where and by whom crimes will likely be committed.
