How do you stop a robot from hurting people? Many existing robots, such as those assembling cars in factories, shut down immediately when a human comes near. But this quick fix wouldn't work for something like a self-driving car that might have to move to avoid a collision, or a care robot that might need to catch an old person if they fall. With robots set to become our servants, companions and co-workers, we need to deal with the increasingly complex situations this will create. Science fiction already envisioned this problem.

While industrial robots are predicted to replace millions of U.S. workers and suppress wage growth in the next decade, reforms in education and social safety net largely lag behind, said a renowned U.S. economist. "There's a real mismatch between our institutions and the technologies coming on board," Daron Acemoglu, an economist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), told Axios Media, an American news website, in an interview published on Sunday night. Industrial robots have taken over routine work from human hands in the past several decades. A paper published in March by Acemoglu and Pascual Restrepo, an economist at Boston University, estimated that the U.S. had already lost between 360,000 and 670,000 jobs to robots since 1990. "Economists are trained to think of technology as always increasing employment and raising wages," said Acemoglu, "but there's no theoretical justification for believing this."

Google is working on a new'panic' feature for Android. It's designed to protect you from malware, and will let you escape an infected app when it tries to take over your phone. Most people's natural reaction after they first realise that they've opened a dodgy link or launched a malicious app is to return to where they came from by repeatedly bashing the back key. Google appears to have built new functionality specifically around that instinct. This elusive idea is something that developers have been chasing for years. Free tools like Google Translate – which is used to translate over 100 billion words a day – along with other apps and hardware that claim to translate foreign languages as they are spoken are now available, but something is still missing. Yes, you can now buy earpiece technology reminiscent of the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy babel fish – a bit of kit which claims to so a similar job to that a university-trained, professionally-experienced, multilingual translator – but it's really not that simple.
What will AI become, what should AI become: AI Now Symposium at MIT Media Lab
With the guiding question "how will AI become a part of our lives?", the AI Now Symposium, hosted by the AI Now Initiative and held on July 10, 2017 5:30–8:30pm at MIT Media Lab, aims to survey the biggest challenges we face as AI becomes more prevalent in our daily lives, from technical, research, and policy perspectives. I was fortunate to attend and liveblog this event, which featured a stunning lineup (including an incredible all-female panel) of experts from a diverse range of backgrounds and specialities. "What should we do" questions abound, from "who should regulate AI" to "how should we mitigate risks," but from our discussions it becomes clear that we do not fully understand AI and its effects in the first place. We spend time exploring "what can we do," asking questions such as "what is AI" and "what are the risks of AI." We leave the symposium with the prevailing thought that AI is as complicated and fallible as the humans that create it -- however and therefore, we should more thoughtfully create AI for the better. Joichi Ito, Director of the MIT Media Lab, gives opening remarks, beginning with a quote: "People worry that people will get too smart and take over the world, but the real problem is that they're too stupid and they're taking over the world."

The internet is going to stop working properly. For now, it's just for one day, though campaigners warn it might be a preview of the future. The world's biggest websites are going to grind to a halt – slowing down, or stopping working in other ways – in protest against intrusions onto net neutrality. It won't be the first time that companies have sabotaged their own websites in defence of the idea that the internet should remain neutral, and that internet providers and other companies shouldn't be able to privilege some kinds of internet traffic over others. But it comes at an especially contentious time, with campaigners and companies warning that the Federal Communications Commission could be close to undermining one of the internet's central principles.
