Nonlinear network-based quantitative trait prediction from transcriptomic data

Quantitatively predicting phenotype variables by the expression changes in a set of candidate genes is of great interest in molecular biology but it is also a challenging task for several reasons. First, the collected biological observations might be heterogeneous and correspond to different biological mechanisms. Secondly, the gene expression variables used to predict the phenotype are potentially highly correlated since genes interact though unknown regulatory networks. In this paper, we present a novel approach designed to predict quantitative trait from transcriptomic data, taking into account the heterogeneity in biological samples and the hidden gene regulatory networks underlying different biological mechanisms. The proposed model performs well on prediction but it is also fully parametric, which facilitates the downstream biological interpretation. The model provides clusters of individuals based on the relation between gene expression data and the phenotype, and also leads to infer a gene regulatory network specific for each cluster of individuals. We perform numerical simulations to demonstrate that our model is competitive with other prediction models, and we demonstrate the predictive performance and the interpretability of our model to predict alcohol sensitivity from transcriptomic data on real data from Drosophila Melanogaster Genetic Reference Panel (DGRP).

On Wednesday, the House of Lords announced a public call for experts to weigh in on issues surrounding AI, including its ethical, economic and social effects as the technology becomes more prevalent. When you think about all the crazy things that AI can accomplish, like a sex robot with a "brain," yeah, we've got some questions too. AI is already poised to take over jobs, as it has for an insurance company in Japan, but Britain's Parliament has concerns from all sides.

In 2011, people witnessed an interesting competition on the television quiz show Jeopardy. It featured the two best players in the history of the show, Ken Jennings, who had the longest unbeaten run of 74 winning appearances, and Brad Rutter, earner of the biggest prize of $3.25 million. Their opponent was a huge computer with over 750 servers and a cooling system stored at a location so as not to disturb the players. The room–sized machine was made by IBM and named after the company's founder, Thomas J. Watson. It did not smile or show emotion, but it kept on giving good answers.

Then, without ever leaving home or queueing at the clinic, you get the diagnosis: a strained neck. Or, at least, eight out of 10 people with those symptoms have one. Would you like to have your case reviewed by a human doctor? The free app Ada, which offered up this diagnosis, was launched in the UK in April.

A robotic harness controlled by a neural network offers tailored treatment that has immediately improved their ability to walk normally. To avoid persistent difficulties walking after a stroke or spinal injury, walking assistance is crucial. But this is a slow process that, if done wrong, can lead to a permanently impaired gait. In the past, several physiotherapists were needed to physically support and guide each person through the process of learning to walk again.
AI is augmenting Morgan Stanley's advisers -- not replacing them
Morgan Stanley is on a mission to combine the best of machine learning, predictive analytics and workflow technology with the human touch provided by its 16,000 financial advisers. Despite the popularity of robo-advisers, clients still want a human being to help them navigate complex life questions, according to Naureen Hassan, chief digital officer for wealth management at Morgan Stanley. Recent studies show that 82% of millennials who work with a financial adviser want more time with that adviser, not less, Hassan said. At the same time, clients also want a simple mobile app to keep track of everything when these decisions have been made. "I don't want to be forced into in-person meetings or shipping and signing a bunch of paperwork," Hassan said.

Rapid advances in technology are revolutionizing the roles of aerial, terrestrial and maritime robotic systems in disaster relief, search and rescue (SAR) and salvage operations. Robots and drones can be deployed quickly in areas deemed too unsafe for humans and are used to guide rescuers, collect data, deliver essential supplies or provide communication services. The first reported use of SAR robots was to explore the wreckage beneath the collapsed twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York after the September 2001 terrorist attacks. Drones and robots have been used to survey damage after disasters such as the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident in Japan in 2011 and the earthquakes in Haiti (2010) and Nepal (2015).
AI data-monopoly risks to be probed by UK parliamentarians
The UK's upper house of parliament is asking for contributions to an enquiry into the socioeconomic and ethical impacts of artificial intelligence technology. The committee says it is looking for "pragmatic solutions to the issues presented, and questions raised by the development and use of artificial intelligence in the present and the future". Commenting in a statement, Lord Clement-Jones, chairman of the Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence, said: "This inquiry comes at a time when artificial intelligence is increasingly seizing the attention of industry, policymakers and the general public. The Committee wants to use this inquiry to understand what opportunities exist for society in the development and use of artificial intelligence, as well as what risks there might be. "We are looking to be pragmatic in our approach, and want to make sure our recommendations to government and others will be practical and sensible.
Facebook to 'launch subscription news service'
Facebook is due to launch a subscription-based news product, it has been reported. The social media giant's news partnerships head Campbell Brown announced the plans at a conference in New York. The feature is likely to allow publishers to create a paywall on Facebook's Instant Articles and guide readers to a publisher's home page to opt for a digital subscription, according to a TheStreet report. The idea for a paywall is based on premium and metered plans and has been in the works for a while, TheStreet said, citing comments by Mr Brown at the Digital Publishing Innovation Summit. The company is widely seen as a threat to publishers as it hoovers up digital advertising revenue.
