ISIS plot using drone to attack Turkish base foiled

An alleged ISIS plot involving a drone attack on Turkey's Incirlik air base -- which is used by the U.S. Air Force -- was foiled Thursday when Turkish authorities arrested a Russian national suspected of being an Islamist militant. Renad Bakiev, who previously traveled to Syria, was detained in the southern city of Adana for planning the drone attack, police said in a statement. Officials said he admitted to surveying the Incirlik air base to plan out his strike, and attempted to attack Americans -- but he was unsuccessful. Adana police said Bakiev had ties to ISIS and also intended to assault the local Alevi community -- a religious minority ISIS regards as heretics. The religious group is also the largest one in Turkey and is an offshoot of Shia Islam.

With his marriage to Norma Levor over, Claude Shannon was a bachelor again, with no attachments, a small Greenwich Village apartment, and a demanding job. His evenings were mostly his own, and if there's a moment in Shannon's life when he was at his most freewheeling, this was it. He kept odd hours, played music too loud, and relished the New York jazz scene. He went out late for raucous dinners and dropped by the chess clubs in Washington Square Park. He rode the A train up to Harlem to dance the jitterbug and take in shows at the Apollo. He went swimming at a pool in the Village and played tennis at the courts along the Hudson River's edge. Once, he tripped over the tennis net, fell hard, and had to be stitched up. His home, on the third floor of 51 West Eleventh Street, was a small New York studio. "There was a bedroom on the way to the bathroom. It was a boardinghouse ... it was quite romantic," recalled Maria Moulton, the downstairs neighbor. Perhaps somewhat predictably, Shannon's space was a mess: dusty, disorganized, with the guts of a large music player he had taken apart strewn about on the center table. "In the winter it was cold, so he took an old piano he had and chopped it up and put it in the fireplace to get some heat." His fridge was mostly empty, his record player and clarinet among the only prized possessions in the otherwise spartan space. Claude's apartment faced the street. The same apartment building housed Claude Levi-Strauss, the great anthropologist. Later, Levi-Strauss would find that his work was influenced by the work of his former neighbor, though the two rarely interacted while under the same roof. Though the building's live-in super and housekeeper, Freddy, thought Shannon morose and a bit of a loner, Shannon did befriend and date his neighbor Maria. They met when the high volume of his music finally forced her to knock on his door; a friendship, and a romantic relationship, blossomed from her complaint. Maria encouraged him to dress up and hit the town.

Golfers wanting to shoot below par or tennis players looking to smash their way past opponents should focus on their backswing, a new study suggests. Scientists assessed the speed at which people learned the basic skills in both golf and tennis, and found that those with consistent backswings perfected their techniques twice as quickly. Tennis star Roger Federer and golfer Rory McIlroy have climbed to the top of their game partly due to their powerful - and consistent - lead-in movement. Tennis players who were able to perform consistent lead-in motions were able to perfect their techniques twice as quickly as those who couldn't. The study demonstrates that any immediately preceding movement needs to be consistent to achieve fast learning.

Conversational User Interfaces (CUI) are at the heart of the current wave of AI development. Although many applications and products out there are simply "Mechanical Turks" -- which means machines that pretend to be automatized while a hidden person is actually doing all the work -- there have been many interesting advancements in speech recognition from the symbolic or statistical learning approaches. In particular, deep learning is drastically augmenting the abilities of the bots with respect to traditional NLP (i.e., bag-of-words clustering, TF-IDF, etc.) and is creating the concept of "conversation-as-a-platform", which is disrupting the apps market. Our smartphone currently represents the most expensive area to be purchased per squared centimeter (even more expensive than the square meters price of houses in Beverly Hills), and it is not hard to envision that having a bot as unique interfaces will make this area worth almost zero. None of these would be possible though without heavily investing in speech recognition research. Deep Reinforcement Learning (DFL) has been the boss in town for the past few years and it has been fed by human feedbacks.

We're working to put the world's fastest GPU into the hands of the world's smartest AI researchers. Last month in Honolulu, NVIDIA shocked top AI researchers, giving them the world's first NVIDIA Tesla V100 GPU accelerators. Last night, in Sydney, we struck again, handing out 15 NVIDIA Tesla V100 GPU accelerators. "I think it's fantastic," said Sergey Levine, an assistant professor at the University of California, Berkeley, who is known for his work at the intersection of deep learning and robotics. Given out at a meetup for participants in our NVIDIA AI Labs program at the International Conference on Machine Learning, and signed by NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang, the V100s are the world's most powerful GPUs, offering more than 100 teraflops of deep learning performance.

What's more, just over a quarter (26%) of youngsters think commercial space travel will be a thing by 2032, and over one in five (22%) think they'll be using computers linked to their brains.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is an umbrella term for "smart" technologies that are aware of and can learn from their environments, enabling them to subsequently take autonomous action. Robotic process automation, machine learning, natural language processing, and neural networks all incorporate AI into their operations. The most distinguishing aspect that separates AI from other general-purpose software is that it can enable machines to respond on their own to signals from the external world–signals that programmers do not directly control and therefore cannot anticipate. AI enables a variety of other emerging technologies as well.
