This summer, Audi held an elaborate media event in Spain to celebrate a new sedan that would allow drivers to let go of the wheel and pedal while in traffic jams and pay attention to something else. The driverless technology heralded a new era for mainstream auto makers in their pursuit to create fully autonomous vehicles. But the rollout by Volkswagen AG's luxury unit--with production for the U.S. originally planned to begin this year--is now uncertain, as the car maker continues to wait for Congress to pass legislation paving the way for autonomous vehicles. "It's not a matter of needing permission, it's more a matter of wanting to introduce the car when we know what the ground rules are," said Brad Stertz, Audi's director of government affairs, who acknowledged a shift in timing. Audi's conundrum reflects the challenge for auto makers as they plunge into an awkward phase of development years before fully driverless cars are ready: how exactly to pass control back and forth between driver and machine.

TV's could soon be controlled by a wave of the hand using new technology developed at a UK university. Researchers have created the Matchpoint system that makes it possible to interact with screens simply by using body movements or waving objects. It lets users change the channel, adjust the volume or access their TV guide simply by moving their hand, or even an everyday object like a cup of tea. TV's could soon be controlled by Minority Report style gestures using new technology developed at a university in the UK. Requiring only a simple webcam, Matchpoint works by displaying moving targets that orbit a small circular'widget' in the corner of the screen.
Amazon's Alexa wants to rule your world
Upon visiting Berlin's IFA2107 -- Germany's answer to CES -- recently, there was one word I kept hearing: Alexa. In the consumer hardware space, it's a great time to be Amazon, if the sheer number of hardware companies jumping on the Alexa bandwagon are anything to go by. Only today it was revealed that Amazon is working on a pair of smart glasses integrating Alexa, intended to look similar to regular glasses with bone conduction technology to allow the user to engage with Alexa without having to wear headphones. Amazon is also working on an Echo connected camera system that cannot only keep a look out for intruders but also Amazon-delivered packages. During the IFA conference, a number of companies made their own Alexa announcements.

It's never been easier to get medical advice. A simple Google search will come back with a series of symptoms and ailments. The doctor has moved into your pocket and there's an increasing number of apps that promise to give an accurate diagnosis. The premise of these Google Play and iOS App Store doctors is simple: an app will provide you with one (or in some cases multiple) suggestions... then the onus is on you to seek medical advice where it's needed. "There are different types of diagnostic tools out there," says David Wong, a lecturer in health informatics at the Leeds Institute of Health Informatics. Wong, along with colleague Hamish Fraser help me test three of the most popular artificial intelligence-powered symptom checker apps in the UK: Ada, YourMD, and Babylon.
A Deterministic and Generalized Framework for Unsupervised Learning with Restricted Boltzmann Machines

Restricted Boltzmann machines (RBMs) are energy-based neural-networks which are commonly used as the building blocks for deep architectures neural architectures. In this work, we derive a deterministic framework for the training, evaluation, and use of RBMs based upon the Thouless-Anderson-Palmer (TAP) mean-field approximation of widely-connected systems with weak interactions coming from spin-glass theory. While the TAP approach has been extensively studied for fully-visible binary spin systems, our construction is generalized to latent-variable models, as well as to arbitrarily distributed real-valued spin systems with bounded support. In our numerical experiments, we demonstrate the effective deterministic training of our proposed models and are able to show interesting features of unsupervised learning which could not be directly observed with sampling. Additionally, we demonstrate how to utilize our TAP-based framework for leveraging trained RBMs as joint priors in denoising problems.
