Deep Learning for Tumor Classification in Imaging Mass Spectrometry

Motivation: Tumor classification using Imaging Mass Spectrometry (IMS) data has a high potential for future applications in pathology. Due to the complexity and size of the data, automated feature extraction and classification steps are required to fully process the data. Deep learning offers an approach to learn feature extraction and classification combined in a single model. Commonly these steps are handled separately in IMS data analysis, hence deep learning offers an alternative strategy worthwhile to explore. Results: Methodologically, we propose an adapted architecture based on deep convolutional networks to handle the characteristics of mass spectrometry data, as well as a strategy to interpret the learned model in the spectral domain based on a sensitivity analysis. The proposed methods are evaluated on two challenging tumor classification tasks and compared to a baseline approach. Competitiveness of the proposed methods are shown on both tasks by studying the performance via cross-validation. Moreover, the learned models are analyzed by the proposed sensitivity analysis revealing biologically plausible effects as well as confounding factors of the considered task. Thus, this study may serve as a starting point for further development of deep learning approaches in IMS classification tasks.

Russia's next-gen combat suit is getting tech that's resistant to nuclear blasts
Russia has a new battle suit that seems to be visually inspired by Star Wars's Imperial Shadow Stormtroopers. While Russia's version likely doesn't come with a cloaking device, the high-tech armor does have a few tricks up its sleeves, including nuclear blast resistant tech. The suit was developed by Rostec and is called the Ratnik-3. The latest upgrade to the new armor includes a reportedly nuclear blast resistant watch. According to a statement released by the press office, the Chief Designer for the Life Support System of the Soldier Combat Outfit at the Central Scientific Research Institute for Precision Machine Engineering, Oleg Faustov, says "The watch, which we have included in the Ratnik outfit, retains its properties upon the impact of radiation and electromagnetic impulses, for example, upon a nuclear blast."
The Most Cringe-Inducing Surgical Robots from IEEE's Intelligent Robots Conference
We're still sifting through the more than 1,200 presentations at IROS 2017, IEEE's massive intelligent robots conference held last month in Vancouver. This week we found some terrifying gems: surgical robots that snake up the nose, puncture the breast, and suction intestinal tissue with motions so jarring they will make any patient glad (or longing) to be passed out during the procedure. We previously highlighted 20 of our favorite videos from the conference. Now, with Halloween approaching, we give you: the five most gruesome (maniacal laugh). Sadistically named the "Stormram," this robot punctures the breast in one slow, ominous motion, to extract a tissue sample.
Recent natural selection causes adaptive evolution of an avian polygenic trait
Many studies have found evidence of rapid evolution in response to environmental change. In most cases, there has been some suggestion of which traits might be most responsive ahead of time. Bosse et al. turn this approach on its head by using genomic regions with a signature of selection to identify traits that are changing. In great tits (Parus major) in the United Kingdom, genomic regions showing selection invariably contained genes associated with bill growth. Indeed, U.K. birds not only have longer bills, but these longer bills are associated with increased fitness.
Dogs really can smell your fear, and then they get scared too
Dog owners swear that their furry best friend is in tune with their emotions. Now it seems this feeling of interspecies connection is real: dogs can smell your emotional state, and adopt your emotions as their own. Science had already shown that dogs can see and hear the signs of human emotions, says Biagio D'Aniello of the University of Naples "Federico II", Italy. But nobody had studied whether dogs could pick up on olfactory cues from humans. "The role of the olfactory system has been largely underestimated, maybe because our own species is more focused on the visual system," says D'Aniello.

A survey of 500 chief information officers (CIOs) from around the world by ServiceNow has found that machine learning has arrived in the enterprise, and is making material contributions to everyday work. To realise its full value, technology leaders must find skilled talent to work side-by-side with machines, in addition to redesigning their organisations and processes. CIOs were interviewed in 11 countries across 25 industries, including 46 CIOs in the UK, to uncover the competitive benefits of adopting machine learning and hear how those leaders are driving results. How you pay extra attention to the kid kicking a soccer ball around her front lawn and the slightly wobbly, nervous looking cyclist. You make these calls by drawing on a lifetime of social and cultural experience so ingrained you hardly need to think about it. But imagine you're an autonomous car trying to do the same thing, without that accumulated knowledge or the shared humanity that lets you read others' nuanced behavioral cues. Treating every pedestrian, cyclist, and vehicle as an obstacle to be avoided might keep you from hitting anything, but it could just as easily keep you from getting anywhere.
