AI could save heart and cancer patients
Researchers at an Oxford hospital have developed artificial intelligence (AI) that can diagnose scans for heart disease and lung cancer. The systems will save billions of pounds by enabling the diseases to be picked up much earlier. The heart disease technology will start to be available to NHS hospitals for free this summer. The government's healthcare tsar, Sir John Bell, has told BBC News that AI could "save the NHS". "There is about ยฃ2.2bn spent on pathology services in the NHS. You may be able to reduce that by 50%. AI may be the thing that saves the NHS," he said.
13 Data Science Resolutions for 2018
To start off the new year in style, DataCamp gathered some New Year's Resolutions from people within the data science industry: from those who are still on their way to becoming a data scientist to those who are already data science professionals. My New Year's resolution is to create more in-depth data science content (blogs, podcasts, and book chapters) covering all of my favorite data topics, to promote greater data literacy for all. I am not good in making such goals because the life always take me through unexpected paths (you know, I am a Chilean living in Poland), but if we leave a big room for surprises, I basically expect three things regarding data science: to learn something new, to contribute to others' data science paths, and to share experiences with the community. For learning, I would like to improve my databases knowledge and how to incorporate them efficiently into my daily work with R. (I expect to see many new SQL courses in DataCamp!). Another area where I cannot wait to improve is how to escalate statistical algorithms to Big Data and learn more about frameworks such as H2O and Spark.
'Crazy' North Sea wind farm island set for 2027
A'crazy' artificial island in the North Sea that could supply renewable energy to 80 million people in Europe is set to open in 2027. Plans for the 2.3 square mile (6 square km) landmass suggest it will be surrounded by fields of offshore wind turbines and come with its own airstrip and harbour. The'North Sea Wind Power Hub', which will be home to a small team of permanent staff, will send electricity via long-distance cables to Britain and the Netherlands, and later to Denmark, Germany, Norway and Belgium. An artificial island (artist's impression pictured) with an airstrip and harbour is set to be built in the North Sea to help power Europe. Dogger Bank, 78 miles (125 km) off the East Yorkshire coast, has been identified as a potential shallow and windy building site for the ยฃ1.3 billion ($1.75 billion) project.

Bosch to acquire stake in map provider HERE
Stuttgart, Germany โ Bosch is acquiring 5 percent in HERE Technologies, a global provider of digital mapping and location services. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price. The acquisition gives a boost to Bosch's services business. It also helps HERE take a further step toward its goal of becoming a global provider of data-based real-time location services to customers both inside and outside the automotive industry. "Bosch is more than cars," says Dr. Volkmar Denner, chairman of the board of management of Robert Bosch GmbH.
Amputee 'feels again' using Star Wars-style bionic hand
Scientist have developed the first bionic hand with a sense of touch that can be used outside a laboratory. Almerina Mascarello, 62, lost her left hand in an accident in a steel factory in 1993. The married mother-of-two has now been fitted with the robot hand that is not only controlled by her brain, but can also feel what it picks up. It allow her to carry out actions that most of us take for granted but pose great difficulties for amputees โ such as getting dressed. Mrs Mascarello says the device, which has been compared to the robotic hand fitted to Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, 'is almost like [her hand] is back again'.

But recently, AI has begun actively expanding its footprint within the enterprise. Executives are trying to more fully comprehend what AI is and how they can use it to better capitalize on business opportunities by gaining insights into their data and engaging with customers more productively, thereby honing a competitive edge. AI is the frontier of enterprise technology, but many misperceptions remain about what it is and how it works.
Expert Believes 2018 Is the Year of the Driverless Car
Driverless cars are the future, but we're not certain how far in the future before these vehicles become mainstream. Some experts are saying this won't happen until the next 40 years, but another expert isn't in agreement with such statements. Before driverless vehicles can go mainstream, there are quite a lot of hurdles to overcome in the legal and infrastructure department. It's possible public streets will require vast changes to accommodate cars that drive themselves, and that's going to cost. One company that is trying to get ahead of the pack is UK Autodrive.
AI can diagnose heart disease and lung cancer more accurately than doctors
Artificial intelligence (AI) has already proven useful in the healthcare industry, and now, two newly developed AI diagnostics systems could change how doctors diagnose heart disease and lung cancer. Cardiologists are very good at their jobs, but they're not infallible. To determine whether or not something's wrong with a patient's heart, a cardiologist will assess the timing of their heartbeat in scans. According to a report by BBC News, 80 percent of the time, their diagnosis of various heart problems is correct, but it's the remaining 20 percent that shows the process has room for improvement. To that end, a team of researchers from the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, England, developed Ultromics, an AI diagnostics system that is more accurate than doctors at diagnosing heart disease. Ultromics was trained using the heart scans of 1,000 patients treated by the company's chief medical officer, Paul Leeson, as well as information about whether or not those patients went on to suffer heart problems.
Schools of robots are mapping the unknown features of the deep sea
If Planet Earth were the back of our hand, we'd disprove the truism about knowing it well pretty quickly. The problem: 71 percent of our planet is covered by ocean, and only about 15 percent of the features under the deep sea have been accurately mapped. These unknowns pose a problem for creating safe navigational charts for boats and underwater vehicles, inhibit scientists from identifying habitats that could host unknown or endangered biodiversity, and even affect our estimates of how the oceans are influencing climate change. Leaders in science and industry are rallying to remedy this imbalance. In June 2017, Japan's grant-making Nippon Foundation and the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO) announced a joint project to map the deep sea, and gave the scientific community a deadline: 100 percent of the ocean floor mapped by 2030.
