Today's vision of a smart home has more to do with what's technologically possible than what people really need. Thus the endless parade of internet-connected wine openers, water bottles, meat thermometers and refrigerators, and a dearth of automation that would clean and fold our laundry, pick up things around the house or assist aging people as their physical strength wanes. Not that some tinkerers aren't trying to come up with life-changing tools, often while trying to persuade consumers to share their routines and shopping habits to make all this work -- and potentially opening the doors to hacking or surveillance in their homes. The annual CES gadget show, which opened in Las Vegas on Tuesday, is a showcase of the latest innovations from big corporations and tiny startups. Some of these inventions could soon be useful to consumers. Others look outlandishly impractical -- or maybe it's too soon to tell.

Facebook 'Portal' to compete with Echo Show, report says

Step aside, Amazon Echo Show: Word has it that Facebook is developing its own home video chat device. According to a report from streaming news service Cheddar, the new voice-controlled device, dubbed Portal, may be priced at $499. Cheddar's sources say Facebook is planning to unveil the device in early May and begin selling it via pop-up stores and online in the second half of the year. It will reportedly feature a screen on the front like Amazon's Echo Show and Lenovo's new Android Assistant-equipped Smart Display, plus a camera with a wide-angle lens and facial-recognition technology that will help users connect with their Facebook accounts.

GDP of Ireland could receive a near €50 billion boost from AI

Artificial Intelligence could see Ireland's GDP raised by just under €50 billion in the next 12 years. A new study also finds that the technology could significantly aid both public and private sector productivity, and even boost jobs in the Republic. A new report from PwC has stated the case for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Ireland. According to the Big Four professional services firm, AI could add 11.6% - or €48 billion - to Ireland's GDP by 2030. Analysts calculated that this projected impact will be driven largely by the possibility for product enhancements (7.9% of GDP in 2030) to increase productivity.
