Teach kids creativity. Ultimately, machines will be better at coding
If you want to bring up a kid to be a successful investor or entrepreneur, the current education system says they should be studying STEM subjects, cramming facts and figures, and immersing themselves in coding class. I've spent my working life as an entrepreneur and investor – I've founded startups, and now invest across Europe for GV (the venture capital investment arm of Google) – but as a father, when I look at the way we're educating our kids, I think there's something missing. Machines are already superintelligent on many axes, including memory and processing speed. Unfortunately, those are the attributes our education system currently rewards, with an emphasis on learning by rote. Part of my job as an investor is to attempt to predict the future – I need to make bets on the way we'll be behaving in the next two, five, ten and 20 years. Computers already store facts faster and better than we do, but struggle to perfect things we learn as toddlers, such as dexterity and walking.
Node snags two top AI researchers to advance AI-fueled search tool
Node, an AI-driven search tool designed to surface the information that matters most to you, announced today that it was bringing on a couple of AI research heavy hitters. It also announced $5 million in additional funding. For starters, the company hired Louis Mornier, one of the founders of early internet search engine, Alta Vista, and most recently the Head of the AI Lab at Airbnb. Mornier will join the startup as Chief Scientist. The company also brought on Jeffrey Johnson as Chief Technology Officer in January.
The EU Is Trying to Decide Whether to Grant Robots Personhood
Future Tense is a partnership of Slate, New America, and Arizona State University that examines emerging technologies, public policy, and society. In 2015, an A.I.-powered Twitter bot did something a little out there--avant-garde one might say. It tweeted, "I seriously want to kill people," and mentioned a fashion event in Amsterdam. Dutch police questioned the owner of the bot over the death threat, claiming he was legally responsible for its actions, because it was in his name and composed tweets based on his own Twitter account. It's not clear whether tweeting "I seriously want to kill people" at a fashion event actually constitutes a crime--or even a crime against fashion--in the Netherlands.
Google Preps Machine-Learning-as-a-Service for Networks Light Reading
Google has started applying its artificial intelligence (AI) expertise to network operations and expects to make its tools available to companies building virtual networks on its global cloud platform. That could be a troubling sign for network technology vendors such as Ericsson AB (Nasdaq: ERIC), Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. and Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK), which now see AI in the network environment as a potential differentiator and growth opportunity. The Internet giant has been using AI to improve its search engine and enhance other consumer-facing products and services. In 2014, it acquired a UK-based AI startup called DeepMind, which subsequently made headlines when it was taught to play Go, a Chinese boardgame of fiendish complexity, and managed to beat Lee Sedol, one of the world's best players. Drawing heavily on its capabilities in machine learning, a branch of AI, Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) is now developing more automated systems to cope with the growing scale of its global network, which comprises data centers and backbone infrastructure.
UK report urges action to combat AI bias
The need for diverse development teams and truly representational data-sets to avoid biases being baked into AI algorithms is one of the core recommendations in a lengthy Lords committee report looking into the economic, ethical and social implications of artificial intelligence, and published today by the upper House of the UK parliament. "The main ways to address these kinds of biases are to ensure that developers are drawn from diverse gender, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, and are aware of, and adhere to, ethical codes of conduct," the committee writes, chiming with plenty of extant commentary around algorithmic accountability. "It is essential that ethics take centre stage in AI's development and use," adds committee chairman, Lord Clement-Jones, in a statement. "The UK has a unique opportunity to shape AI positively for the public's benefit and to lead the international community in AI's ethical development, rather than passively accept its consequences." The report also calls for the government to take urgent steps to help foster "the creation of authoritative tools and systems for auditing and testing training datasets to ensure they are representative of diverse populations, and to ensure that when used to train AI systems they are unlikely to lead to prejudicial decisions" -- recommending a publicly funded challenge to incentivize the development of technologies that can audit and interrogate AIs.
AI translation needs work after error-filled debut at Boao Forum
The day that machines will surpass the ability of humans in language translation could still be many years away, following the breakdown of Tencent Holdings' artificial intelligence-powered translation system during the Boao Forum for Asia in Hainan province last week. Tencent's simultaneous translation system, which was designed to provide both interpretation and transcripts, made an error-filled debut at the high-profile forum, sometimes known as Asia's Davos. It spouted gibberish that were displayed live on screen at the event and in a WeChat mini program. These included garbled characters, repeated words and even broken Chinese, screenshots of which were widely circulated on social media last week. Tencent took the high ground by conceding the errors and aiming for improvements in future.

The term "Industrial Revolution" – here onwards "IR" describes the period in which there was a gradual shift of improving the process of manufacturing and distributing goods. The First IR took place from the 18th to 19th centuries in Europe and America. It was a period when mostly agrarian, rural societies became industrial and urban. The iron and textile industries, along with the development of the steam engine, played central roles in the IR. The Second IR took place between 1870 and 1914, just before World War I.
AI, GIS, big data helped in successful Bharat Bandh on April 2: Dalit activist
The Bharat Bandh on April 2 called by Dalit groups was a result of the successful use of artificial intelligence (AI), the geographic information system (GIS) and big data, according to a core group of US-based Dalit activists. The protest, which surprised many because of its sudden eruption, was organised against the alleged dilution of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. New Jersey-based Deelip Mhaske, who heads a secretive network of some 100 overseas Dalit activists based in the US, the UK, Australia and the Middle East said the protest shows that Dalits no longer need to be affiliated to any political establishment. "A new era for Dalit politics has begun by adopting artificial intelligence, the GIS and social media," Mhaske told PTI in an interview as he gave an insight into how Dalit groups were mobilised during the protest. Most of these Dalit activists in the secretive group are from the IT sector and work in some of the top info-tech companies.

When I was waking up at 6 AM to study Support Vector Machines I thought: "This is really tough! But, hey, at least I will become very valuable for my future employer!". If I could get the DeLorean, I would go back in time and call "Bulls**t!" on myself. The truth is that reality is much more nuanced, and the fact the field is still far away from being mature isn't helping at all. The classical story goes something like this: "data scientists spend 80% of their time getting, cleaning and managing data, only the rest is spent on analysis and machine learning".
Revealed: how many Brits are paying too much for insurance
"The FCA found that a loyal customer pays 75% more than a new customer after five years – how is that fair?" Those were the words of Phoebe Hugh, chief executive and co-founder of insurance app Brolly, when the insurtech released the findings of its new research on overpayment. Blaming what it called the "renewal trap," Brolly said 64% of British policyholders are paying more than they should for insurance. According to the start-up, which uses artificial intelligence to analyse existing cover and offer better options, consumers in the UK are overpaying by at least £9 billion annually by not switching providers when it's time to renew. Launched last November, Brolly alerts users when a renewal is due and provides analysis of whether a policyholder is underinsured or overpaying.
