Paul Daugherty and James Wilson, senior technology leaders at Accenture, argue that robots and smarter computers aren't coming for our jobs. The hyper-realistic automaton, modeled to be an exact replica of London-based actor Tedroy Newell, sat down for a refreshing lager at The Prince Alfred pub in Maida Vale, in the west of the capital. Unsuspecting customers were unprepared for what came next, with the humanoid berating locals before crushing the drinking vessel in his hands. The robot, described as'indistinguishable from humans', was created as part of a stunt to promote TV Series Westworld. Voicera today announced it has acquired Wrappup to expand its meeting assistant Eva to the AI note-taking app for Android and iOS smartphones and tablets. Voicera has raised $20 million from some of the biggest names at the intersection of enterprise and AI, including Microsoft Ventures, Cisco Ventures, Salesforce Ventures, and GV, formerly Google Ventures. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Cisco and Microsoft both shared plans last year to bring Spark Assistant and Cortana into the workplace and meeting rooms. With millions of G Suite customers and Alexa expanding into the workplace as well, Google Assistant may join other tech companies that want to bring their assistants into offices and meeting rooms.

Artificial intelligence (AI) should be subject to a cross-sector code of practice that ensures the technology is developed ethically and does not diminish the rights and opportunities of humans, according to a new report by the House of Lords. In the comprehensive report, released this morning, the House of Lords Select Committee said the UK is in a "unique position" to help shape the development of AI on the world stage, ensuring the technology is only applied for the benefit of mankind. "The UK has a unique opportunity to shape AI positively for the public's benefit and to lead the international community in AI's ethical development, rather than passively accept its consequences," said Committee chairman Lord Clement-Jones. "The UK contains leading AI companies, a dynamic academic research culture, and a vigorous startup ecosystem as well as a host of legal, ethical, financial and linguistic strengths. We should make the most of this environment, but it is essential that ethics take centre stage in AI's development and use," added Clement-Jones.

Weapons of war have evolved over time, but the decision to kill has always been left with humans. But with developing AI and autonomous technology, it is now possible to build killing machines that require no human input at all. Taking the final decision away from a human raises serious ethical concerns over the use of fully-autonomous weapons. It could mean wars will be less about fighting, and more extermination. In an article for The Conversation, Dr Peter Lee, Director for Security and Risk Research and Innovation at the University of Portsmouth explains the potential devastation these machines could cause.

Brittney Kaiser, a former employee for Cambridge Analytica -- who left the company in January and is today giving evidence in front of a UK parliament committee that's investigating online misinformation -- has suggested that data on far more Facebook users may have found its way into the consultancy's hands than the up to 87M people Facebook has so far suggested had personal data compromised as a result of a personality quiz app running on its platform which was developed by an academic working with CA. Another former CA employee, Chris Wylie, previously told the committee the company worked with professor Aleksandr Kogan to gather Facebook users' data -- via his thisisyourdigitallife quiz app -- because Kogan had agreed to work on gathering and processing the data first, instead of negotiating commercial terms up front. CA's intent was to use Facebookers' data for political microtargeting, according to evidence provided by Wylie. I should emphasise that the Kogan/GSR datasets and questionnaires were not the only Facebook-connected questionnaires and datasets which Cambridge Analytica used. I am aware in a general sense of a wide range of surveys which were done by CA or its partners, usually with a Facebook login – for example, the "sex compass" quiz.

When it comes to big data and machine learning, analytical chemistry seems to lag behind the other sciences. Despite developments in analysis techniques which mean there are more data available than ever before, chemists may not be using the latest data handling techniques, including AI and machine learning, to their full potential. One of the leading research institutions in the USA, New York University, has a Data Science Center that recruits academics with specialties ranging from engineering and cosmology to psychology. However, despite the wide range of disciplines represented, there are no chemistry researchers involved in the department. The reason why is unclear, according to Professor Eero Simoncelli, a neuroscientist in the department.

Many are doing brisk business as companies around Eastern Europe accelerate an automation drive. At Rittal, a maker of switch gears and control cabinets for industrial robots, orders rose 15 percent last year and have jumped 25 percent since January. "Companies aren't able to produce more, so their competitiveness is falling," said Jaromir Zeleny, Rittal's managing director. "They don't want to be so dependent on people." Eastern Europe became a manufacturing powerhouse by luring multinationals with low wages. That advantage is ebbing, though.
