Google is betting that the future of healthcare is going to be structured data and AI. The company is applying AI to disease detection, new data infrastructure, and potentially insurance. In this report we explore Google's many healthcare initiatives and areas of potential future expansion. Google has always seen itself as more than a search and advertising company. Now it's turning its focus to healthcare, betting that its AI prowess can create a powerful new paradigm for the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. "So tomorrow, if AI can shape healthcare, it has to work through the regulations of healthcare … In fact, I see that as one of the biggest areas is where the benefits will play out for the next 10 – 20 years." In short, Google seems to be going after the healthcare space from every possible angle. For example, did you know that Google has a project to release sterilized mosquitoes to control the spread of infectious disease? Machine-learning, the precursor to AI, is already widely found across retail, in use in tools from chatbots to recommendations. Retailers from Shop Direct to the Yoox Net-A-Porter Group and Ocado are investing heavily in the relevant technologies which are set to lead to true AI in time. Machine learning automates human decision making, enabling it to happen at scale. Retailers will move further towards true AI when they develop machines that can make original decisions, reaching altogether new conclusions.


BenevolentAI gets $115M to harness AI for new drug discovery

BenevolentAI, a UK company using artificial intelligence for drug development, has raised $115 million in new funding, mostly from undisclosed investors in the United States. Existing backer Woodford Investment Management also participated in the round, which brings the company's total funds raised to over $200 million. "We are very pleased with the response to the fundraising," Ken Mulvany, founder and chairman of BenevolentAI, said in a statement. "It reflects the rapidly growing global interest in the AI pharmaceutical sector and the recognition of our place as the dominant player within it. We have come a very long way since we founded the business in 2013. The capabilities of our technology didn't exist six years ago. We are the pioneers in this sector and have evolved into a fully integrated, AI-enabled drug development company with the ability to deliver better medicines at previously unimaginable speeds -- this ultimately means patients will receive the right medicines, at a lower cost, in less time."

Here's why Apple built a recycling robot that rips apart 200 iPhones per hour

Apple has announced the creation of Daisy, a robot specifically designed to quickly disassemble several different iPhone models and recycle parts that can be used again, the company detailed in a Thursday press release. Daisy is actually a bit of a composite itself--the robot is made up of parts from another recycling robot, Liam, that was created in 2016, the release said. Daisy will be used first in the US and Europe and then expand worldwide. According to Apple's release, Daisy will be able take apart nearly 200 iPhones per hour, pushing the company closer to its goal of ending its reliance on mining for vital smartphone materials like cobalt. From every 100,000 iPhones Daisy disassembles, the release said, Apple will be able to harness about 1 kg of gold, 7.5kg of silver, almost two tons of aluminum, and 11kg worth of certain rare-earth elements and minerals like cobalt, palladium, tungsten, tantalum, and tin.


Robot Builds Europe's First 3D-Printed House in 48 Hours

As part of the Salone del Mobile design festival, presented by Engineering firm Arup and CLS Architects, the house demonstrates the role 3D printing can play in reducing construction waste and increase efficiency. It also allows for materials to be reused at the end of the building's life, as opposed to ending up in landfill, demonstrating sustainability throughout the building process. A robot from Cybe Construction was used to print the one storey concrete walls, while the roof, windows and doors were completed afterwards. Set apart from other 3D processes the project's uses a robotic manipulator mounted on a portable base.


BMW's Digital Day showcases automaker's innovations in A.I. and 5G technology

BMW Group's Digital Day, a sort of tech fair and outing held at its headquarters in Munich, gives the automaker an opportunity to showcase some of its latest developments and innovations in automotive technology. The focus at this year's exhibition was increased intelligent vehicle connectivity, mostly on the wireless front, and near-future introductions of upgraded digital services. For instance, the company announced that future models will soon be equipped to handle 5G mobile wireless connectivity, the next advancement for cellularbased wireless services. This means faster and better mobile data bandwidth for increased data transfer speeds and thus, enhanced vehicle connectivity. As a result, future BMWs will feature more HD navigation maps, while enabling a direct exchange of data between similarly equipped vehicles.


Artificial intelligence will wipe out half the banking jobs in a decade, experts say

Advances in artificial intelligence and automation could replace as many as half the nation's financial services workers over the next decade, industry experts say, but it's going to take a big investment to make that happen. James D'Arezzo, CEO of Glendale-based Condusiv Technologies, says that's where things are headed. And the process will be complicated. "Unless banks deal with the performance issues that AI will cause for ultra-large databases, they will not be able to take the money gained by eliminating positions and spend it on the new services and products they will need in order to stay competitive," he said. Intensive hardware upgrades are often cited as an answer to the problem, but D'Arezzo said that's prohibitively expensive.
