Or they can avoid the fee and have readers pay the publisher instead. Often it is libraries that foot this bill through expensive annual subscriptions. This is not the lot of wannabe fiction writers, it's the business of academic publishing.

THE UNIVERSITY of Salford has launched new undergraduate and Master's degrees to prepare engineers for the revolution in driverless and electric vehicles. Driverless cars will be worth an estimated £63 billion to the global economy by 2035 with tens of thousands of jobs created, and the UK government has already pumped millions of pounds into tests and trials across the country. The Salford courses are thought to be the first in Europe to train engineers for the trio of new generation technologies - electric, hybrid and driverless vehicles. "The rise of new vehicles over the next decade will be vast and transformational," explains Ghasem Nasr, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Innovation at Salford. "New technology requires new skills and completely new perspectives on how we think about and engineer cars."

A new A.I. biometric verification method can successfully identify individuals by the way they walk across a pressure pad on the floor. The technology could one day be used as an alternative, or augmentation, to existing biometric identification system in places like airports. "We have realized that sensing human gait has biometric potential from the early days when we demonstrated the Manchester'Magic Carpet' to user groups back in 2010," Krikor Ozanyan, Professor of Photonic Sensors & Systems at Manchester, told Digital Trends.

AI better at finding skin cancer than doctors: study

A computer was better than human dermatologists at detecting skin cancer in a study that pitted human against machine in the quest for better, faster diagnostics, researchers said Tuesday. A team from Germany, the United States and France taught an artificial intelligence system to distinguish dangerous skin lesions from benign ones, showing it more than 100,000 images. The machine -- a deep learning convolutional neural network or CNN -- was then tested against 58 dermatologists from 17 countries, shown photos of malignant melanomas and benign moles. Just over half the dermatologists were at "expert" level with more than five years of experience, 19 percent had between two and five years' experience, and 29 percent were beginners with less than two years under their belt. "Most dermatologists were outperformed by the CNN," the research team wrote in a paper published in the journal Annals of Oncology.


Accounting for the Neglected Dimensions of AI Progress

We analyze and reframe AI progress. In addition to the prevailing metrics of performance, we highlight the usually neglected costs paid in the development and deployment of a system, including: data, expert knowledge, human oversight, software resources, computing cycles, hardware and network facilities, development time, etc. These costs are paid throughout the life cycle of an AI system, fall differentially on different individuals, and vary in magnitude depending on the replicability and generality of the AI solution. The multidimensional performance and cost space can be collapsed to a single utility metric for a user with transitive and complete preferences. Even absent a single utility function, AI advances can be generically assessed by whether they expand the Pareto (optimal) surface. We explore a subset of these neglected dimensions using the two case studies of Alpha* and ALE. This broadened conception of progress in AI should lead to novel ways of measuring success in AI, and can help set milestones for future progress.
