What are some underdeveloped areas in computer science research right now (2018)? Over the past few decades, computer science research, either in industry or academia, has led to ground breaking technology innovations such as the internet, which continues to change our lives. In the post-Moore's Law era, advances in cloud computing affected so many sub-areas of computer science like operating systems and database systems. Furthermore, solid state drives (SSDs) changed the way we design storage systems, which were previously tailored for the mechanical hard drive (HDD). Recently, quantum computing promises lightning-speed calculations as opposed to classic electronics-based computers.

Following a major backlash from employees, the Alphabet unit has laid out new rules for its AI software. The new restrictions could help Google management defuse months of protest by thousands of employees against the company's work with the U.S. military to identify objects in drone video. How we Organized the Largest Machine Learning Competition of the Year
Last thursday was held the second annual edition of "Le Meilleur Data Scientist de France" -- a 2-hours kaggle-like machine learning challenge. As far as we know, this is the largest data scientists gathering of the world with this format (tell us if you have heard about something similar?) It took 6 months to FrenchData -- an initiative promoting outstanding french data projects -- to organize this event. Several members of Zelros team were part of the adventure. Tesla's autopilot was on and driver's hands were off wheel ahead of fiery crash, report finds
A Tesla's autopilot function was engaged in the minutes before a fiery crash that killed its driver in California earlier this year, according to a federal inquiry. In the roughly 20 minutes before the vehicle slammed into a barrier near Mountain View and burst into flames, the car's autopilot feature was in "continuous operation", the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) found in its initial investigation. During the critical 60 seconds leading up to the crash, the NTSB reported, the car's driver repeatedly placed his hands on the steering wheel. The vehicle also accelerated in the final three seconds.
Can a Robot Be Divine?
Robots appear to be in the middle of a gradual but persistent transition from automated tools that perform specific tasks to artificially intelligent entities that we interact with socially and emotionally. It's not at all clear where this is going to end up--people toss around the idea of robot companionship and even robot love with some frequency, for example. What hasn't been explored nearly as much is the idea of robots in a religious context. We've seen a few examples of robots assisting in religious tasks, but what if robots could take things a step farther, and become sacred objects, embodying divinity within a robot itself? At the ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human Robot Interaction (HRI) in March, Gabriele Trovato from Waseda University in Japan (with colleagues from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú) presented a paper taking a look at whether divine robots might be possible, and why it could be useful to develop such robots in the first place.
Avalanche Studios unveils nostalgic '80s robot shooter 'Generation Zero'
If you've caught the '80s nostalgia bug after Stranger Things, this could be the game for you. Machines have taken over rural Sweden, and it's unclear how or why. And it's up to a group of young adults to stop them. That's the gist of Generation Zero, an open-world shooter announced by Just Cause and Mad Max developer Avalanche Studios just a few days before E3 kicks off. The '80s-style soundtrack should give life to the game, which sees you trying to solve the mystery of why the machines are attacking while you're battling them.

The study of artificial intelligence has frequently benefitted from close engagement with other branches of cognitive science, and computational theories of cognition have in turn contributed to models of the mind in philosophy, neuroscience, and animal cognition. However, even as we stand at the threshold of a new era of developments in artificial intelligence, disciplinary differences and disparate theoretical vocabularies still linger, and the goal of a unifying theory of human, animal, and artificial minds remains elusive. To that end, the Varieties of Mind conference aims to bring together leading researchers in psychology, animal cognition, artificial intelligence, and philosophy of mind to explore questions including the following. Artificial intelligence will improve medical treatments
FOUR years ago a woman in her early 30s was hit by a car in London. She needed emergency surgery to reduce the pressure on her brain. Her surgeon, Chris Mansi, remembers the operation going well. But she died, and Mr Mansi wanted to know why. He discovered that the problem had been a four-hour delay in getting her from the accident and emergency unit of the hospital where she was first brought, to the operating theatre in his own hospital.
