At the end of June, a SpaceX rocket carried an autonomous AI device to the six astronauts onboard the International Space Station. The historic launch carried 5,900 pounds of cargo which reportedly included a delivery of ice cream -- plus some fresh blueberries and some "super-caffeinated coffee." And 11 pounds of that was a talking robot, roughly one foot in diameter. All of its plastic and metal was generated by 3D printers.

The United Kingdom and France have agreed to work together more closely on technology, artificial intelligence and cyber security, announcing plans for a digital conference to promote deeper integration. The conference will take place this year, and has been conceived to'foster cross-Channel collaboration between academics, industry and government'. Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary Matt Hancock announced the event with his French opposite, Françoise Nyssen, at the recent UK France Summit in Sandhurst. The UK invests more in technology than any other European country, and was named the best-prepared country in the world for AI implementation in December by Oxford Insights. France, meanwhile, is encouraging startups and entrepreneurship - recently repurposing a Paris railway station to host new businesses, multinationals and investors.

The year 2018 has seen a good influx of innovative medical devices. Artificial intelligence (AI) serves as a critical component in most of these novel devices. "A device or a product that can imitate intelligent behavior or mimics human learning and reasoning. Artificial Intelligence includes machine learning, neural networks, and natural language processing. Some terms used to describe artificial intelligence include: computer-aided detection/diagnosis, statistical learning, deep learning, or smart algorithms."

A custom-built AI designed to diagnose brain tumors and predict hematoma expansion dominated some of China's best doctors in a competition last Saturday in Beijing. The AI, dubbed BioMind, ultimately scored 2:0 against its human competitors, comprised of 15 senior doctors from China's premier hospitals. BioMind was developed by a collaboration between a team from the Artificial Intelligence Research Center for Neurological Disorders at the Beijing Tiantan Hospital and researchers from the Capital Medical University. BioMind's developers opted to feed the AI with data sets featuring tens of thousands of images depicting nervous-system-related diseases, which were retrieved from Tiantan Hospital's archives stretching over the past decade. Wang Yongjun, executive vice-president of Tiantan Hospital, stated that this training ultimately enabled the AI to become proficient in diagnosing neurological diseases such as meningioma and glioma with an accuracy rate of over 90%.
