Most of you will have interacted with several algorithms already today. Algorithms are of course simply sets of rules for solving problems, and existed long before computers. But algorithms are now everywhere in digital services. An algorithm decided the results of your internet searches today. If you used Google Maps to get here, an algorithm proposed your route. Algorithms decided the news you read on your news feed and the ads you saw.

Researchers have developed a new method to avoid embedding bias into machine learning algorithms. Niki Kilbertus and colleagues at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Germany have developed a new method to avoid embedding bias into machine-learning algorithms. Their technique involves incorporating sensitive data in the training process while including an independent regulator and applying encryption mathematics. When training the artificial intelligence (AI), an organization can use as much non-sensitive data as required, but both the organization and the regulator only receive sensitive data in an encrypted form. This is sufficient for the regulator to check whether the AI is making biased decisions that are shaped by anything inferred from non-sensitive data.

Why are human rights relevant to the debate on Artificial Intelligence (AI)? That question was at the heart of a workshop at Data & Society on April 26 and 27 about'AI and Human Rights,' organized by Dr. Mark Latonero. The timely workshop brought together participants from key tech companies, civil society organizations, academia, government, and international organizations at a time when human rights have been peripheral in discussions on the societal impacts of AI systems. Many of those who are active in the field of AI may have doubts about the'added value' of the human rights framework to their work or are uncertain how addressing the human rights implications of AI is any different from work already being done on'AI and ethics'.

Scientists are about to get a serious assist in their quest to simulate brains. HPE has deployed Blue Brain 5, a supercomputer dedicated to simulations and reconstructions of mammalian brains as part of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne's Blue Brain Project. The system is based on HPE's existing SGI 8600 (above) and packs a hefty 372 compute nodes between its Xeon Gold, Xeon Phi and Tesla V100 processors, not to mention a whopping 94TB of memory. More importantly, it's flexible -- Blue Brain 5 has four configurations to prioritize different computing tasks, and it can host subsystems geared toward relevant tasks (including deep learning and visualization) while operating as a cohesive whole. This kind of power is necessary, even if simulating a complete brain is still a long ways off.

The reusable Phantom Express spaceplane will take off vertically and land horizontally, and is being built by Boeing as part of the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Experimental Spaceplane program, and its engines have now passed a key test. It is hoped it will play a crucial role in future space warfare, allowing military bosses to launch satellites and replace damaged ones within hours. The reusable Phantom Express spaceplane will take off vertically and land horizontally, and is being built by Boeing as part of the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Experimental Spaceplane program. The Pentagon's research arm now test-fired the new rocket engine 10 times in as many days, a critical step toward a space plane that can put satellites in orbit on a daily basis, project officials said.

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk on Tuesday landed a deal with Chinese authorities to build a new auto plant in Shanghai, its first factory outside the United States, that would double the size of the electric car maker's global manufacturing. The deal was announced as Tesla raised prices on U.S.-made vehicles it sells in China to offset the cost of new tariffs imposed by the Chinese government in retaliation for U.S. President Donald Trump's heavier duties on Chinese goods. Musk was in Shanghai Tuesday, and the Shanghai government in a statement said it welcomed Tesla's move to invest not only in a new factory in the city, a center of the Chinese auto industry, but in research and development, as well. China has long pushed to capture more of the talent and capital invested by global automakers in advanced electric vehicle technology. Tesla plans to produce the first cars about two years after construction begins on its Shanghai factory, ramping up to as many as 500,000 vehicles a year about two to three years later, the company said.
