Pentagon Plans to Publish Broad Artificial Intelligence Strategy 'Within Weeks'

A top Defense Department tech official on Tuesday said the Pentagon is weeks away from publishing its first broad strategy for artificial intelligence. The department plans to release a report detailing its long-term plans for artificial intelligence "within weeks" as leaders increasingly stress the technology's potential to strengthen national security, said Thomas Michelli, the department's acting deputy chief information officer for cybersecurity. Though he didn't disclose specifics regarding the strategy, Michelli said the Pentagon is standing up a number of artificial intelligence capabilities across the enterprise and people should expect "a big announcement" in the weeks to come. The department's updated cyber strategy, which is scheduled to publish shortly before the artificial intelligence plan, will also discuss AI and offer more details on how the military is funneling additional resources into the technology, according to Michelli. Robots and AI will actually create more jobs than they take

ROBOTS will make more jobs than they take in the UK, according to a new report. The combination of artificial intelligence and robotics will displace up to 7 million jobs between 2017 and 2037. However, this will lead to a reduction in costs and increases in spending, which in turn could generate 7.2 million jobs โ€“ a net gain of 200,000 jobs, according to accountancy firm PwC. Jobs in health, scientific and technical services, and hospitality are predicted to increase, while those in manufacturing, transport and storage, and public administration will decrease. Automation seems to be less disruptive than we had feared.


'All-new Xbox hardware' to be announced soon, teases Microsoft

Microsoft is set to launch "all-new Xbox hardware", the company has announced. It has revealed little more other than the fact that the announcements will made at Gamescom, the major industry event next month. It is unlikely that the announcement refers to a new console: the Xbox One X was only released in November, and the next full new version of the Xbox is not expected until 2020. The I.F.O. is fuelled by eight electric engines, which is able to push the flying object to an estimated top speed of about 120mph. Using machine learning for music knowledge discovery

Researchers at the University of Pompeu Fabra, Cardiff University and the Technical University of Madrid used machine-learning algorithms to discover new things about the history of music. One of the main tasks of musicology researchers is to develop and validate musical hypotheses, after studying historical documents and other available information. Many historical documents have now been digitized and can be accessed and browsed on a computer, making it easy for researchers to access them online. However, basic search engines operate at an "exact text string matching" level, and hence do not always capture the underlying meaning in the content. In a recently published study, music data science researcher Sergio Oramas and his colleagues tested natural language processing (NLP) approaches that could make the most out of archived historical documents, helping scientists to uncover new hypotheses and identifying interesting patterns in available data.

Rolls-Royce may use bug-like robots to assist airplane engine repair

Rolls-Royce showed off a handful of small robots this week that could aid in the inspection and repair of airplane engines sometime in the future. Though still under development, the tiny robots could lead to faster, less labor-intensive engine inspections as well as cost reductions for engine maintenance. The technologies, which were displayed at the Farnborough Airshow, are being developed in partnership with other companies as well as researchers at the University of Nottingham and Harvard University. Swarm robots are small, cockroach-inspired robots that in theory will be able to be delivered inside of an engine and with small cameras, provide a look inside. This way, the engine wouldn't have to be removed from the plane in order for an inspection to take place.
