Google has released the ninth edition of its mobile operating system, with a range of features aimed at providing a more personalised experience for smartphone users. Before diving into global investment trends in Artificial Intelligence ("AI") and Machine Learning ("ML"), it may be worth quickly defining them. Its proposed solutions, while excellent, are partial and create the impression that the underlying purpose of this report was to make academia's voice heard in Whitehall and secure new long-term funding. No one doubts the stature of the UK's universities and research institutes, or the world-leading AI and robotics expertise within them, but by appearing to regard AI solely as an academic discipline, the report misses nearly all of the most important challenges facing the UK. As noted above, this report is interesting because it pushes the voices of workers to the front of the debate on the impact of AI. Too often we get drawn into the excitement around the potential of automation, the opportunities that could be gained, without thinking about the people that could be left behind as a result. Let's hope that this new commission can apply real pressure to the government to come up with an effective strategy and some new practical policies around addressing the forthcoming changes – working with citizens, employees and trade unions, rather than against them.

You might have visions of robots, drones, and voice-enabled technology, machines that can communicate with other machines, and biometric security systems. Well, the reality is that we're much closer to this vision than you might realize. For example, a recent study from Epicor has found that 41 percent of businesses are already implementing some form of robot technology*. This is a trend that we're also seeing among our customers. What video games in schools can teach us about learning

At the end of the summer term at Southgate primary school in Crawley, West Sussex, a class of 10-year-olds are folding together cardboard models of remote-controlled cars and decorating them with pipe cleaners, pens, googly eyes and tape, with the aim of using them to transport a biscuit across a table and into the open mouths of their teachers. The kids are playing with Nintendo Labo, an ingenious game that comes with a box of fold-up cardboard models that turn from inert facsimiles into working toys, with the addition of a Nintendo Switch console. A cardboard piano becomes a working keyboard with a screen. A cardboard fishing rod can be used to play a fishing game, attached by string to a base housing the console. They are fun to play with, but they also teach engineering principles – the software includes a child-friendly but comprehensive breakdown of how the console uses features such as vibration, infrared cameras and gyroscopes to make the models work.


India to implement 5G services by 2022 to catch up with Japan and other Asian peers

India plans to roll out state-of-the-art 5G telecom services in the next four years, a senior official said, as the nation rushes to catch up with its Asian peers. "We are not there yet," Telecom Secretary Aruna Sundararajan said in an interview in New Delhi, adding that the complete rollout of 5G will be done by 2022. "5G won't be driven by supply, it'll be driven by demand and the rest of industry needs to wake up to this." The South Asian nation, traditionally a laggard in embracing the latest technology in telecommunications, will follow South Korea, Japan and China, countries where 5G service will be offered within the next two years. The high-speed and low-latency service will help Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Digital India plan, which seeks to broaden Internet access.


From Here to Human-Level Artificial General Intelligence in Four (Not All That) Simple Steps

In the 15 years since I first introduced the term "artificial general intelligence" (AGI), the AI field has advanced tremendously. We now have self-driving cars, automated face recognition and image captioning, machine translation and expert AI game-players, and so much more. However, these achievements remain essentially in the domain of "narrow AI"--AI that carries out tasks based on specifically-supplied data or rules, or carefully-created training situations. AIs that can generalize to unanticipated domains and confront the world as autonomous agents are still part of the road ahead. The question remains: what do we need to do to get from today's narrow AI tools, which have become mainstream in business and society, to the AGI envisioned by futurists and science fiction authors?


Fake goods seizures surge after customs unleashes AI on counterfeiters

Artificial intelligence is being credited for helping Hong Kong customs officials increase seizures of fake goods sold online by about one-third in the first six months of this year, resulting in a haul of counterfeit items worth HK$1.96 million (US$247,000). A new supercomputer they began using last December scoured websites 24 hours a day and detected close to 2,000 of the 5,200 items seized by the Customs & Excise Department. Over the same period last year, officers netted 11,800 pieces of counterfeit goods worth HK$1.47 million. A source said the department might look into expanding the capacity of the computer, which gathers important information during investigations, but he stressed it would complement rather than replace manual enforcement work by customs officers. "The analytics tool saves us a lot of time screening online platforms manually," the source said.


Lip-Reading AI Could Help the Deaf--or Spies

U.K.-based Deepmind has created artificial intelligence software that can read lips. An artificial intelligence (AI) program from DeepMind can read lips better than professional lip readers after reviewing thousands of hours of YouTube videos along with transcripts via machine learning. The researchers tested the program on 37 minutes of video it had not previously viewed, and it misidentified only 41% of the words. In comparison, the best previous computer method, which focuses on individual letters instead of phonemes, had a 77% word error rate, while professional lip readers had a 93% error rate in the same test, which lacked context or body language. Columbia University's Hassan Akbari says the AI, if incorporated into a phone, would enable hearing-impaired users to have a "translator" with them wherever they go.
